The president and the former GOP nominee will meet for lunch in the private dining room, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced in a written statement.
The meeting fulfills a promise the president made on election night to work with Romney going forward. "We may have battled fiercely, but it's only because we love this country deeply, and we care so strongly about its future," the president said at the time. "In the weeks ahead, I also look forward to sitting down with Governor Romney to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward."
Their encounter comes as the president is negotiating with congressional Republicans to prevent the economy from going over the "fiscal cliff" of mandatory spending cuts and tax increases set for Jan 1.
There will be no press coverage of the meeting, according to the White House.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict already has 1.2 billion "followers" in the standard sense of the word but he soon will have another type when he enters what for any 85 year old is the brave new world of Twitter.
Vatican officials say the pontiff, who is known not to love computers and still writes most of his speeches by hand, will have his own handle by the end of the year.
"It will be an officially verified channel," said a Vatican official.
Primarily the tweets will come from the contents of his weekly general audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church holidays. They will also include reaction to major world events, such as natural disasters.
The leader of the world's 1.2 billion or so Roman Catholics will not, of course, write the tweets himself, but he will sign off on them before they are sent in his name.
But even divine intervention might not help squeeze the gist of a papal encyclical, which can run to more than 140 pages, into 140 characters.
Those tweets will probably be limited to a link to a url with the entire document.
The papal handle has not yet been disclosed but it is widely expected to be @BenedictusPPXVI, his name and title in Latin.
The pope has given a qualified blessing to social networking.
In a document issued last year, he said the possibilities of new media and social networks offered "a great opportunity", but warned of the risks of depersonalisation, alienation, self-indulgence, and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones.
In 2009, a new Vatican website, www.pope2you.net, went live, offering an application called "The pope meets you on Facebook", and another allowing the faithful to see the pontiff's speeches and messages on their iPhones or iPods.
The Vatican famously got egg on its face in 2009 when it was forced to admit that, if it had surfed the web more, it might have known that a traditionalist bishop whose excommunication was lifted had for years been a Holocaust denier.

I?m not convinced that the problem with marriage is that it is broken; I am convinced that a problem with marriage is that it isn?t big enough for everyone.
In the past week, both The New York Times and Slate have addressed modern marriage and its related problems, asking whether privatization of marriage, and state recognition of other kinds of civil care-giving agreements, isn?t the way to go from now on.
I floated something like this idea briefly back in my post-honeymoon-induced haze, wondering why we couldn?t just designate some people as family members (effectively ?marrying? them) regardless of whether we felt romantic love for them. For the government to bestow certain benefits on certain people just because they hit the relationship jackpot (or think they did so) seems bizarre, arbitrary and ineffective if the state has an interest in engendering happy people-units who support each other, and I think it does.
I?m fine with ?marriage? meaning a forever-aimed partnership based on romantic love and ?civil union? or ?civil partnership? meaning some other kind of more malleable legal-social arrangement; that seems reasonable to me so long as it?s a semantic and not a practical difference in terms of the potential for governmentally bestowed benefits. I?m not fine with marriage being the only way that humans get to legally choose their own, non-blood-related family members.
The first question to ask, I think, is: What is the point of marriage today? If we can figure out what marriage is supposed to be for, then we can better know what to do with it and how to regulate it (or not). And to do that, I think religion must be taken out of the equation entirely when it comes to the building of the best possible governmentally recognized social partnerships.
To my mind, marriage is a religious institution only inasmuch as religion generally and historically has tended to be a significant guiding factor in human beings? social interactions. It is a source of spiritual fulfillment, yes, but also a powerful form of social and political coercion.
And today, religion is on its way out as a means of norm-enforcement and societal structure-building. I think it?s nice to call people who make laws ?Senator? or ?Congresswoman? rather than ?Reverend? or ?Father.? When Catholic bishops throw public tantrums over contraception because the looming specter of a truly gender-equal society threatens their snake oil sales? I?m thankful for an ever-increasing separation of church and state. I very much like the idea of religion as something that is personally fulfilling, not publicly prescriptive.
Without getting too freshman-social-theory on everyone, I see families as being proto-governments. The more we can encourage folks to enthusiastically support each other, creating long-term, mutually beneficial, legally defined care-giving relationships not because they?re afraid of public shame or eternal damnation but because they want to love and nurture each other, the less pressure we need to put on the government (and taxpayers) to support individuals.
(Though to be clear, I am as socialist as they come and believe, unlike certain failed presidential candidates in recent memory, that human beings have an absolute right to, you know, food and shelter and that good government effectively provides a wide and well-funded safety net for citizens who need it.)
The point of marriage, to me, is to help people get by. For it to have a spiritual aspect seems like a fine, but deeply personal, choice that needs nothing to do with secular government.
Life is easier with a partner. I didn?t realize how true this was until I had one who seriously could not easily legally leave me and who didn?t particularly want to, anyway. Whether it?s knowing your partner can pick up dinner on the way home when you?re working late or having them to rely on?emotionally, financially?after the loss of a job or during a long illness, things are so much easier with a support system. Child-rearing? Has absolutely got to be easier with a teammate.
Which is why, to me, it?s a real dick move to tell people that there?s only one kind of partner you can legally choose as a family member, and for the rest of it you?re going to have to rely on the genetic luck of the draw. It is hard to find someone to marry; there?s a whole horrible self-help industry built around it! And what none of those self-help love gurus will tell you is that basically it?s down to luck and a good bullshit detector.
For some people, their blood relatives are and can be the support system they need in life; this is a lovely thing. But others are not so lucky, finding themselves related to abusers, bigots and other kinds of assholes. Why not allow people to legally define one or a few self-chosen, rather than chance-assigned, family members for the purposes of financial burden-sharing, inheritance, child-rearing, care-giving in old age, etc.? Why do we privilege (notoriously fickle!) romantic love as being the defining basis on which people should establish their forever partnerships? Particularly when, as we see these days, without religious mandates and powerful cultural coercion, people don?t tend to stay married when they don?t want to?
People will, of course, need to end or amend these relationships, the same as we do with our business partners. That?s not a bad thing! I like the idea of renewable contracts in marriage or civil unions. I see the possibility of legally ?renewing? my relationship with Patrick every five years (let?s say) not as being a depressing sign-on-the-dotted-line bit of drudgery but as a celebration of continued support that happens at regular intervals.
How many relationships have you seen that saw the slow decline in interest on behalf of one partner over time? Instead of viewing marriage as an indefinite contract?during which time many people may feel increasingly adrift as the time between wedding and the present day grows?we could see it as an exciting, ongoing project. A business, if you will, of which the profits aren?t (solely) financial, but emotional and social and cultural.
I?m so pleased that more and more states are legalizing gay marriage. It?s an absolute travesty that the government only bestows family-choosing privileges on certain (straight) people. But as we continue to move forward as a country?and I think marriage equality is a huge step forward?I simply don?t think it?s to society?s long-term benefit to favor romantic love and genetic accident over willfully chosen family-making.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 6, 2012) ? A direct, head-to-head comparison of two of the newer treatments available for type 2 diabetes yielded mixed results.
The 26-week, multicenter DURATION-6 clinical trial found that daily injections of liraglutide (Victoza) were slightly more effective than weekly injections of exenatide (Bydureon) in lowering blood sugar and promoting weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, the patients taking exenatide suffered fewer negative side effects such as nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.
"Both of these agents are very exciting diabetes products and really good blood sugar-lowering drugs," said John B. Buse, MD, PhD, first author of the study, division chief of endocrinology and metabolism in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, director of the UNC Diabetes Care Center and a a PI Extender of the UNC NIH Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA).
"The results of this study will be helpful to both doctors and patients in shared decision-making about which of these two drugs is better suited for a particular patient," Buse said. "For example, for some patients the additional weight loss advantage provided by liraglutide might tip the scales in favor of that drug. For other patients, though, the greater convenience of once-weekly injections and the more favorable side effects profile of exenatide would be extremely appealing."
Results of the study were published online ahead of print on Nov. 7, 2012 by The Lancet.
In the study, 912 patients from 105 sites in 19 countries were randomized to receive injections of once-daily liraglutide or once-weekly exenatide for 26 weeks. The primary endpoint of the study was the overall reduction in HbA1c (blood sugar) levels from baseline to 26 weeks.
Both drugs produced a clinically significant decrease in blood sugar levels. By the end of the study, 60 percent of the patients taking liraglutide had achieved HbA1c levels of less than 7 percent, vs. 53 percent of patients on exenatide. Both drugs also produced progressive decreases in bodyweight, but patients taking liraglutide lost about 2 pounds more weight than those on exenatide.
Patients in both groups reported having side effects on occasions over the six month trial. The most common were nausea (21 percent in the liraglutide group vs. 9 percent in the exenatide group), diarrhea (13 percent vs. 6 percent) and vomiting (11 percent vs. 4 percent). The occurrence of side effects lessened in both groups over time. Five percent of patients on liraglutide and 3 percent on exenatide dropped out of the study because of side effects.
The study was funded by Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals. Amylin is the manufacturer of Bydureon, the exenatide preparation that was used in this study.
In addition to Dr. Buse, other authors were Michael Nauck, Thomas Forst, Wayne H-H Sheu, Sylvia K. Shenouda, Cory R. Heilmann, Byron J. Hoogwerf, Aijun Gao, Marilyn K. Boardman, Mark Fineman, Lisa Porter and Guntram Schemthaner.

CBS has been the lone Hulu refusenik among the biggest US broadcasters -- even with rumors of licensing discussions underway at least two years ago, we've usually had to visit the network's own site if we wanted a CSI fix without paying by the show. The deadlock is over at last now that CBS and Hulu have struck a deal. The agreement isn't quite what we'd hope for, focusing almost exclusively on back catalog titles like Medium and Star Trek, although celebrity gossip junkies will like knowing that Entertaintment Tonight segments will be viewable the day they air on regular TV. We'll have to wait until January 2013 for the selection to be ready -- not to mention shell out for Hulu Plus to get full access -- but there's at least an end in sight to one of the longer content droughts in streaming video.

Like any kind of warfare, you have a distinct advantage when you can tap good and reliable intelligence. Here?s the problem: Your salespeople don?t get enough accurate intelligence about their prospects. As a result, their pipelines are filled with flaky opportunities. And your sales managers don?t have enough guts to call them on it. Here?s the litmus test: When your salespeople submit their forecasts, do you or your managers ?adjust? them down for realism? It?s typically easier for salespeople and their managers to discuss why they didn?t win business, instead of asking themselves the right questions before going to battle.
Here are some of the right questions:
1. Can we win and should we pursue this opportunity?
2. If yes, how do you know? What is the reasoning? A guess? A hunch?
3. Which strategy should we adopt to ensure that we win? Why? To begin, ask your salespeople: ?How much does it cost to win a new account?? Calculate the actual costs associated with generating a lead, a contact, an appointment, a proposal and a sale. Now, add in the opportunity cost of missed business they could have won if they weren?t wasting time on business that won?t close quickly. If you?re like most selling organizations, the cost per pursuit is several hundred or thousands of dollars. Multiply that by the number of opportunities you chased and didn?t close in the last 12 months.
Staggering, isn?t it? Before your salespeople charge off to fight the next battle, ask them: ?If this was your money, would you spend it??
Challenge No. 2
Your salespeople don?t do enough planning work before going to battle.
Before going into battle again, make sure your salespeople can answer these questions (honestly):
? What are you trying to sell and, most importantly, why? Sounds simple enough until you actually try to quantify it.
? Is the project funded? What if there?s not enough? Who has discretionary use of the funds? Who can get more? Are we speaking to the right person here?
? What is the sale worth to the organization? Does the ROI justify the investment of time, money and effort?
? Have we sold this prospect anything in the past? Who? What? Where? When? How? Why?
? How many contacts have you already had with this prospect? How many phone calls, face-to-face meetings, etc.? Do you have a clear next step?
? Do you have an organizational chart? Do you have an inside coach?
? What has been (or will be) your sales strategy?
? Where are you in the selling process?
Here is a checklist:
1. Were you invited in, or did you beg for an appointment?
2. What were the prospect?s reasons for seeing you?
3. What were the challenges, problems and frustrations you identified in the interview?
4. How important is it to the prospect to fix those problems?
5. How committed is the prospect to fixing those problems? (Time, effort, money, willingness to fail.)
6. What agreement has you and the prospect reached concerning the decisions that will be made each step of the way?
Few salespeople understand the cost of pursuing sales and often fill their funnels with bad business. Fewer think through winning strategies before going into sales ?battle.?Ask your salespeople these fundamental sales questions before committing resources to a battle you cannot win. Successful sales professionals qualify vigorously and religiously before committing time and energy, so their closing ratios are 90 percent or better. So, what are yours?

All applicants must fill in the application form at the UAF's centralised application service. The application form is available only during the application period (see timetable below).
The printed application form with all required supporting documentation must be received by University Admissions Finland no later than December 19th, 2012 at 16:00 (GMT+2).
After the application documents are preprocessed by University Admissions Finland, all applications are sent to the University of Jyv?skyl? for scoring and selection.
The consortium will apply for scholarships on behalf of the top-ranking selected students from the European Commission. Applicants do NOT need to apply separately for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

As I recall, Pap didn't forget much but he often disremembered things. At 70, I find myself disremembering
things from time to time and I'm beginning to use Pap's word when speaking or writing. My definition of disremember is,
"Something not completely remembered in time or context." Disremembering long ago events is a great excuse for some serious
creative license when writing old tales.
I wrote a tale for my Mom for a Mother's Day present about 30 years ago. The tale was about one of my earliest
memories of her dad, my Pap. I realized I "Disrememberd" parts of the actual event so I started the tale with this line:
"Memories, like pebbles in a brook, are smoothed and gently rounded by the fast flowing stream of time." That line
let me off the hook for accuracy.
These days I am still a lot like an elephant; I never forget. I will, however, occasionally admit to disremembering.

US President Barack Obama?s reelection bid is preoccupying the people in Nyang?oma Kogelo, his Kenyan father?s home village, as challenger Mitt Romney?s run is invigorating Mormons in the East African country.
Mr. Romney?s candidatcy has thrust the Christian group into the spotlight here, with its leaders on Monday?unveiling a website called Kenya Mormon Newsroom to help answer questions ignited by the American political process. Leaders say the church maintains a firm political neutrality.
?In the most recent past, questions have been asked about who we are. The reasons is we have a member of the church running as president of the United State of America,? said Elder Hesbon Usi, an official here with the Mormons' Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.??Since?people do not have the right source of information and truth they are looking for, a lot tend to go to other websites that are misleading. They get information that is not correct.?
Elder Thomas Hatch, a former Utah state senator who now serves as the church?s deputy director of public affairs for the region, said questions the church has encountered have prompted leaders to share more through a network of websites.
Hatch says Mormons would relish the idea of a Romney presidency, hoping it would bring the church out of obscurity. However, he cautioned that there could be many downsides as well as upsides, since presidents have to make tough decisions.
??If Mr. Romney is seen as a Mormon president, there could be retaliation by other countries against our church and missions,? he says.
Meanwhile, in Nyang?oma Kogelo, the western Kenyan village that is home to the president's step-grandmother, Sarah Obama,?the community is organizing daily prayers for Obama, with special prayers reported in churches and mosques. Often gathering in small groups to listen to news and discussions on FM radios from mobile phones, the residents say they have learned Obama was facing a stiff challenge.
?We would like to organize bigger meetings to show support, but we fear the security is not good. Terrorists may attack us because of our Obama links. The threats and attacks in Kenya make use very cautious,? says Vitalis Ogombe, the chairman of a community group called the Obama Kogelo Cultural Committee.
For them, the interest in the American election is driven by pride more than economic or material gains, since Obama is viewed as a grandson there.
?We are proud because we have seen he can make a good global leader. People now know us globally because of him. We are praying that he continues,? says Mr. Ogombe.
But since Obama?s election in 2008, Kogelo can also count material gains. Electricity has been installed in the area and infrastructure improved. Micro-finance organizations and nongovernmental organizations have also moved here to help improve the community?s living standards. The local people say they are better since he became president.
For Jesse Mugambi of the University of Nairobi, America foreign policy on Africa remains the same, irrespective of whoever is the "boss."
?The voters out there will decide what is good for them, and Kenyans will put up with whoever wins. That is what democracy demands,? he says.
Some analysts have also considered an Obama loss. Charles Onyango-Obbo, in an opinion in the Daily Nation today, analyzed why an Obama loss would be good for him and the world.
?Obama has the energy and smarts to be an influential international citizen and non-state actor to join Clinton and Gates as the non-white face at the top of international NGO priesthood. To do that, he has first to lose the election,? wrote Mr. Onyango-Obbo.

NEW YORK (AP) ? More New Yorkers got power Saturday for the first time since Superstorm Sandy struck the region, but frustrations mounted over gasoline shortages as refueling sites turned into traffic jams of horn-honking confusion.
Gas rationing went into effect in northern New Jersey, while crowds lined up at free fuel distribution sites in New York's boroughs, where a limit of 10 gallons per person was imposed. New York officials then said emergency vehicles had the priority over the public.
"It's chaos, pandemonium out here," said Chris Damon, whose family was displaced from his home in the Queens neighborhood of Far Rockaway and are staying with relatives in Brooklyn. He circled the block for 3? hours at the Brooklyn Armory, where the National Guard was directing traffic.
"It's ridiculous. No one knows what's going on," he said.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had announced that the 5,000-gallon trucks from the Defense Department would set up the emergency mobile gas stations at five locations around the New York City metropolitan area.
"Do not panic. I know there is anxiety about fuel," he said.
After the long lines formed, New York state officials said the public should stay away from the refueling stations until emergency responders first got their gas and more supplies are then made available.
The scene was more orderly in hard-hit Staten Island, where a line of cars stretched for two miles under the supervision of police and National Guard troops. Another 400 people were on foot, carrying gas cans.
As gas rationing went into effect at noon in northern New Jersey, police began enforcing rules to allow only motorists with odd-numbered license plates to refuel. Those with even-numbered plates must wait until Sunday.
Jessica Tisdale of Totowa waited in her Mercedes SUV for 40 minutes at a gas station in Jersey City, but didn't quite understand the rules and was ordered to pull away because of her even-numbered plate.
"Is it the number or the letter?" she asked around 12:10 p.m. "I don't think it's fair. I've been in the line since before noon. I don't think it's fair. There's no clarity."
The officer who waved her out of line threw up his hands and shrugged.
At an Exxon station in Wall, N.J., Kathryn Davidson was unaware of the start of rationing but beat the noon deadline despite a 45-minute wait in line and an even-numbered plate.
"How are people supposed to know?" said Davidson, 53, who said it reminded her of the 1970s, when a similar plan was in place.
"There were fistfights and everything. It got nasty," she said. "Everyone seems pretty pleasant as of right now."
In Washington, President Barack Obama visited the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for an update on superstorm recovery efforts and said "there's nothing more important than us getting this right."
"Obviously we've now seen that after the initial search and rescue, the recovery process is difficult and it's painful," Obama said. "But I'm confident that we will continue to make progress as long as state and local and federal officials stay focused."
Obama cited the need to restore power; pump out water, particularly from electric substations; ensure that basic needs are addressed; remove debris; and get federal resources in place to help transportation systems come back on line.
About 2.6 million people remained without power in six states after Sandy came ashore Monday night.
About 900,000 people still didn't have electricity in the New York metropolitan area, including about 550,000 on Long Island, Cuomo said.
About 80 percent of New York City's subway service has been restored, he added.
The storm forced cancellation of Sunday's New York City Marathon. Mayor Michael Bloomberg reversed himself Friday and yielded to mounting criticism about running the race, which starts on hard-hit Staten Island and wends through all five of the city's boroughs.
Bloomberg, who as late as Friday afternoon insisted the world's largest marathon should go on as scheduled, changed course shortly afterward amid intensifying opposition from the city comptroller, the Manhattan borough president and sanitation workers unhappy they had volunteered to help storm victims but were assigned to the race instead. The mayor said he would not want "a cloud to hang over the race or its participants."
Bloomberg, in his first comments since canceling the marathon, said he fought to keep it going but the controversy was becoming "so divisive" and too much of a distraction.
"I still think that we had the resources to do both, and that we want people to be able to take a break and that sort of thing. ... It's a big part of our economy," Bloomberg told WCBS-TV on Saturday during a visit to the borough of Queens. As he spoke, he was met by catcalls from residents angry about the city's response to the storm.
Many runners understood the decision to call off the marathon. The overall death toll from the superstorm was 105, including 41 in New York City. The widespread power outages made many New Yorkers recoil at the idea of police protecting a foot race and evicting storm victims from hotels to make way for runners.
The cancellation forced runners to deal with what to do with no race.
More than half of the 40,000 athletes were from out of town. Their entry fees were paid. Their airline tickets were purchased. Their friends and family had hotel rooms. And all week the race was a go, even after Sandy came ashore Monday.
"I understand why it cannot be held under the current circumstances," Meb Keflezighi, the 2009 men's champion and 2004 Olympic silver medalist, said in a statement. "Any inconveniences the cancellation causes me or the thousands of runners who trained and traveled for this race pales in comparison to the challenges faced by people in NYC and its vicinity."
ING, the financial company that is the title sponsor of the marathon, said it supported the decision to cancel. The firm's charitable giving arm has made a $500,000 contribution to help with relief and recovery efforts and is matching employee donations. Sponsor Poland Spring said it would donate the bottled water earmarked for the marathon to relief agencies, more than 200,000 bottles.
"When you have a significant amount of people voicing real pain and unhappiness over its running, you have to hear that. You have to take that into consideration," said Howard Wolfson, deputy mayor for government affairs and communications.
"Something that is such a celebration of the best of New York can't become divisive," he said. "That is not good for the city now as we try to complete our recovery effort, and it is not good for the marathon in the long run."
Each day has brought signs of recovery.
Aida Padilla, 75, was thrilled that the power at her large housing authority complex in New York City's Chelsea section had returned late Friday.
"Thank God," said Padilla, 75. "I screamed and I put the lights on. Everybody was screaming. It was better than New Year's."
Asked about whether she had heat, she replied, "hot and cold water and heat! Thank God, Jesus!"
But on Staten Island, there was grumbling that the borough was a lower priority to get its services restored.
"You know it's true," said Tony Carmelengo, who lives in the St. George section of Staten Island and still does not have electricity.
Added his neighbor, Anthony Como: "It's economics. Manhattan gets everything, let's face it."
The governor said the New York area had a strong sense of community, "but until you have your lights on you're not happy."
"We're not going to stop until we have every house and every home restored. ... This was truly a crisis, but it requires patience," Cuomo said.
NYU Langone Medical Center, one of two New York hospitals that had to evacuate patients at the height of the storm, said it would reopen Monday, although some doctors would see patients at alternate sites.
Seven backup generators at the hospital failed Monday night, forcing the evacuation of 300 patients.
At Bellevue Hospital Center, some 700 patients had to be evacuated after the power failed. An official there said the hospital could be out of commission at least two more weeks.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he would make public a list of when New Jersey utility companies intend to restore power to each community. Even if they end up working faster or slower, he said, residents will have a sense of when power will be restored so they can plan their lives a bit better.
Commuter rail operator NJ Transit said it would have more service restored in time for the workweek to start Monday, most of Atlantic City's casinos reopened, and many school districts decided to hold classes on Thursday and Friday ? days previously reserved for the New Jersey Education Association's annual conference, which has been canceled.
