That's not even an apples-to-oranges comparison - at least those would both be fruits. Comparing mass and distance is literally nonsensical. What? Are you 3 kg away from me?
Mass relates directly to distance, since 1 liter of water (volume of a cube 0.1m on each side) is approximately a kilogram. Alternately, 1 gram is approximately the mass of a cube of water 0.01m on each side; this was, in fact, the original definition [wikipedia.org] as decreed by the French government.
If the French had chosen the mass of 1m^3 of water as the standard then the unit of mass would be in-scale with the units of distance and volume. In a system like that I could estimate my volume by simply stepping on a scale and reading my mass; the same number would be both my mass and volume, just change the unit label. Instead they chose a system where the volume of the definitive unit mass was 6 orders of magnitude away from the unit volume. As if to confuse matters more, the standard volume unit (liter) is 10^3 smaller than the cube of the unit length and (if holding water) has 10^3 larger mass than the unit mass.
If you don't care about this, that's fine; neither did the French. They cared more about the units being useful on their own in day-to-day life, and were happy that there was an even factor of 10 difference between the scales. The historical fact remains, though, that the French knowingly chose not to unify their units when creating the system, presenting modern geeks with the first-world problem of needing a conversion factor between mass and volume rather than the units being strictly 1-to-1, and affording them the opportunity to complain about it. Wisconsin state judge strikes down law limiting union rights
MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Wisconsin's controversial law that limited the rights of public sector unions and sparked recall elections was struck down on Friday by a Wisconsin judge.
Republican Governor Scott Walker, who survived a recall election earlier this year that stemmed from passage of the collective bargaining law, said after the ruling that he was confident the state would ultimately prevail in an appeal.
"Sadly a liberal activist judge in Dane County wants to go backwards and take away the lawmaking responsibilities of the legislature and the governor," Walker said in a statement.
The ruling on Friday by Dane County Circuit Court Judge Juan Colas stems from a challenge by unions representing Madison school teachers and Milwaukee city employees. It was unclear what immediate impact his ruling would have.
Colas ruled that eliminating collective bargaining rights for municipal employees including teachers violated the workers' right to free speech, association and equal protection.
He also ruled that the law's requirement that Milwaukee city workers make pension contributions violated a home-rule provision in the state constitution.
Several provisions "single out and encumber the rights of those employees who choose union membership and representation solely because of that association" in violation of their free speech and association rights, Colas found.
John Matthews, executive director for the union that represents about 5,000 Madison school district teachers, said the ruling "certainly has made people feel empowered again instead of feeling downtrodden and pushed aside."
"I think we are on pretty solid ground to withstand any appeals and any attempts by the far right to do away with union members' rights," Matthews said, adding that the agreement between Madison teachers and the district expires in June 2013.
Wisconsin's Republican-led legislature approved the sweeping changes to public sector union powers last year in sessions called to fix a state budget deficit, sparking massive union-backed protests and efforts to recall Walker.
Walker easily survived a recall election in June and has become a champion for fiscal conservatives.
The law forced most state workers, including teachers, to pay more for health insurance and pensions, limited their pay raises, made payment of union dues voluntary and forced unions to be recertified every year. Numerous legal challenges have been pursued.
Lester Pines, who represents the unions in the challenge, said Colas' ruling was broader than a ruling by a federal judge in March that struck down parts of the law that required annual recertification votes and made payment of dues voluntary.

NEW YORK (AP) ? NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman maintains the league will lock out players Sunday if a new labor deal isn't reached, and star player Sidney Crosby isn't optimistic the season will start on time.
With both sides far apart and little time before the current deal expires at midnight EDT Saturday, the league's board of governors met in New York on Thursday as a group of more than 280 players gathered at a hotel a short distance away.
Following lockouts last year by basketball and football owners, Bettman says hockey management is determined to come away with economic gains, even if it forces the NHL's fourth work stoppage since 1992.
"Two other leagues ? the NBA and the NFL ? their players have recognized that in these economic times there is a need to retrench," Bettman said during a news conference that followed the unanimous endorsement of a lockout during a two-hour owners' meeting.
The last labor stoppage caused the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 season, a lockout that ended only when players accepted a salary cap.
"Right now it's not looking great," said Crosby, a Pittsburgh Penguins star who was just 16 when the last lockout began, "but things can change pretty quickly."
Training camps are scheduled to open Sept. 21 and the season is slated to start Oct. 11.
Crosby and others will consider playing overseas if part or all of the NHL season is canceled.
Management's latest offer, made Wednesday in response to a players' proposal, will be in effect until Saturday. Once the lockout begins, Bettman says the economic damage would cause owners to offer players a less beneficial deal. No talks were held Thursday and none were scheduled.
Players currently receive 57 percent of hockey-related revenue, and the owners want to bring that number down as far as perhaps 47 percent. The union offered a deal based on actual dollars, seeking a guarantee of the $1.8 billion players received last season.
"The fact is, we believe that 57 percent of HRR is too much," Bettman said. "Even a brief lockout will cost more in terms of lost salary and wages than what we're proposing to do to make a deal that we think we need to make."
After the current contract was agreed to in July 2005, then union head Bob Goodenow resigned two weeks later. He was replaced in 2010 by Fehr, who led baseball players through three work stoppages in the 1980s and '90s.
Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller said Fehr is doing a far better job communicating with members than leadership did in the last lockout. Miller believes that he and his fellow players are more in the loop about what is going on than the 30 league owners, who are prohibited by NHL bylaws from publicly commenting about the negotiation process.
"I doubt that all the owners are as well informed as all the players," Miller said. "I don't know if that's going to get me in trouble or not. I just feel like it's kind of whatever they are told by Gary. I guess it's a little bit like politics. Some people can't watch Fox News because they think it's all spun to the right, and some people can't watch MSNBC because it's spun to the left.
"You have this whole thing where I'm sure they feel like a lot of what we're saying is spin."
Players struck in April 1992, causing 30 games to be postponed.
This would be the third lockout under Bettman. The 1994-95 lockout ended after 103 days and the cancellation of 468 games. The most recent lockout was finally settled in July 2005 ? 301 days into the work stoppage and a month after the league would usually have awarded the Stanley Cup.
"You get a real sense of the unity and the commitment and the participation and the understanding and the knowledge that these players have," Fehr said. "It's very gratifying.
"The players very much want to reach an agreement, provided that it is one which is fair and which is equitable and treats them appropriately."
Bettman said the union has controlled the scheduling of the meetings and suggested players had reasons for wanting to delay negotiations. The league tried to start talks last summer, at last winter's All-Star game, during the playoffs last spring and again at the Stanley Cup finals.
"Looking back in hindsight, it looks like there was no urgency on the part of the players' association to engage or get anything done," Bettman said. "It's happened over the summer. I can't and won't speculate as to why that would be their intention, but it is what it is. If you look at the record and you look at it in hindsight, I think it is crystal clear."
Annual industry revenue has grown from $2.1 billion to $3.3 billion under the expiring deal. Owners asked players to cut their share of hockey related revenue during a six-year proposal. Players are concerned management hasn't addressed the league's problems by re-examining the teams' revenue-sharing formula.
The owners' latest offer raised the percentage of hockey related revenue given to players from the previous proposal of 46 percent. Initially, the NHL sought to drop the number from the current 57 percent to 43 percent.
In the last negotiations, the players' association accepted a salary-cap system for the first time and absorbed a 24 percent rollback on all existing contracts.
Having made those concessions, the union doesn't think it should have to make more this time after a period of record financial growth.
Bettman cited the on-ice success for teams, noting that there have been seven different champions over the course of this contract, and all clubs but the Toronto Maple Leafs qualified for the playoffs at least once.
"We've had seven years of incredible competitive balance," Bettman said. "The game on the ice has never been better. That is a function of this system. The system as originally negotiated needs some adjustments. It turned out to be too rich a deal for the first seven years. We lived with it, but I'm not going to apologize for saying we need to adjust it.
"The thought was somehow they got slammed in the negotiations last time. They didn't. We made at the time what we thought was a fair deal. It actually turned out to be more fair than it should have been."

Striking image shows atomic bonds

A pioneering team from IBM in Zurich has published single-molecule images so detailed that the type of atomic bonds between their atoms can be discerned.
The same team took the first-ever single-molecule image in 2009 and more recently published images of a molecule shaped like the Olympic rings.
The new work opens up the prospect of studying imperfections in the "wonder material" graphene or plotting where electrons go during chemical reactions.
The images are published in Science.
The team, which included French and Spanish collaborators, used a variant of a technique called atomic force microscopy, or AFM.
AFM uses a tiny metal tip passed over a surface, whose even tinier deflections are measured as the tip is scanned to and fro over a sample.
The IBM team's innovation to create the first single molecule picture, of a molecule called pentacene, was to use the tip to pick up a single, small molecule made up of a carbon and an oxygen atom.
This carbon monoxide molecule effectively acts as a record needle, probing with unprecedented accuracy the very surfaces of atoms.
It is difficult to overstate what precision measurements these are.
The experiments must be isolated from any kind of vibration coming from within the laboratory or even its surroundings.
They are carried out at a scale so small that room temperature induces wigglings of the AFM's constituent molecules that would blur the images, so the apparatus is kept at a cool -268C.
While some improvements have been made since that first image of pentacene, lead author of the Science study, Leo Gross, told BBC News that the new work was mostly down to a choice of subject.
The new study examined fullerenes - such as the famous football-shaped "buckyball" - and polyaromatic hydrocarbons, which have linked rings of carbon atoms at their cores.
The images show just how long the atomic bonds are, and the bright and dark spots correspond to higher and lower densities of electrons.
Together, this information reveals just what kind of bonds they are - how many electrons pairs of atoms share - and what is going on chemically within the molecules.
"In the case of pentacene, we saw the bonds but we couldn't really differentiate them or see different properties of different bonds," Dr Gross said.
"Now we can really prove that... we can see different physical properties of different bonds, and that's really exciting."
The team will use the method to examine graphene, one-atom-thick sheets of pure carbon that hold much promise in electronics.
But defects in graphene - where the perfect sheets of carbon are buckled or include other atoms - are currently poorly understood.
The team will also explore the use of different molecules for their "record needle", with the hope of yielding even more insight into the molecular world.

While the iPhone 5 rumors were popping, I couldn't help think this was just some kind of stretched out iPhone 4S. During the keynote presentation, I was impressed by the features but couldn't help continuing on this path: Would it just be the same??
Well, when I finally got the thing in my hand, even for a few minutes,?I was delighted to discover how different it is.
Yes, the iPhone 5 is thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4S, but not in a plasticky way that would suggest some of Samsung's smartphones. If the iPhone 4S represents the?heft and?machined precision of a handgun, the iPhone 5 has the impossible physique of a laser blaster. It's light and thin in the way that the future should be.
The matte finish on the smartphone's back is a blessing and a curse. I like that there's a lot less glass here for me to shatter, but the way it looks takes away from the pure elegance of the iPhone 4 design: Two panes of shiny glass, separated by a steel border. I find that the white iPhone 5 (above) looks a little washed out, less bold, where the black version (below)?is smarter, if perhaps more masculine than its predecessor.
The taller screen is not as gangly as I has thought, and when I saw a clip of "The?Avengers" on it, I could appreciate why the design decision was made. Movies aren't my No. 1 activity on my phone, but the 16x9 ratio is a major standard for movies and more, so it just makes sense.
There's a springiness to the phone's?interface that suggests the stomping A6 processor, but I couldn't load up anything that let me really see the polygons fly. Also, part of that smoother operation could be iOS 6, because much of it?? for instance, the Music app?? has been retooled to better interact with iCloud and iTunes.
What was a fun thing to test out, even if I never use it in real life, is the camera's?Panorama feature: You just hoist the phone aloft and pan across your field of view, and you end up with a seamless panoramic image, suitable for framing (if you're any good at photography, that is ? alas, I am not).

Dell Inspiron 13z
The Dell Inspiron 13z is a stylish looking ultraportable, with a clear design identity and reasonable price. Though not quite an ultrabook thanks to a few unchecked boxes on Intel's specification list?it's a tad too thick, and it lacks the flash cache needed for speedy boot times?it's still a decent portable performer. We just wish that Dell didn't bog down an otherwise stylish design with needless port covers and unwanted software.
Design
The Inspiron 13z features a two-tone color scheme, with a dark grey lid and palmrest surrounded with a band of silvery-white aluminum. Built into the palmrest, and sharing the same brushed metal surface, is a multitouch trackpad with separate right and left mouse buttons. In our hands-on testing the trackpad was smooth and responsive, and worked whether mousing with one finger or performing gestures such as two-finger scrolling or pinch-zooming. The full-size keyboard features chiclet-style keys with rounded corners, and aside from arrow-buttons that have been shrunken down to half-size, the keyboard has a standard layout.
The Inspiron 13z has a 13.3-inch 1,366-by-768 resolution display, which is the common resolution in this size, and offers a high enough resolution to enjoy videos at 720p or to tile windows side-by-side for multitasking. While the display isn't necessarily amazing, the accompanying speakers are pretty good, with speakers from SkullCandy, and software enhancement with WaveMaxx 4.0. It doesn't match the HP Envy 4-1043cl , with its Beats Audio, but it's still satisfying.
While not an ultrabook?it lacks the speedy flash memory cache needed to meet Intel's specifications?the dimensions of the are pretty similar to those of the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 , measuring 0.82 by 13.7 by 9.05 inches (HWD) and weighing 3.81 pounds, as contrasted to the Lenovo's 3.75-pound weight.
Features
The Inspiron 13z is equipped with one USB 3.0 port with PowerShare, two USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, and HDMI output, a combination headphone and microphone jack, and a built-in card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro). Dell hides all of these ports behind plastic port covers, which can be a pain to open and often get in the way when trying to plug in peripherals. While we may appreciate the functional protective port covers on Dell's rugged laptops, they're far from functional on the Inspiron 13z, and may be more trouble than they are worth if you regularly plug in peripherals or headphones. There is no optical drive, so you may want to pick up an external optical drive if you want to enjoy DVDs or burn files to disk. The Dell Inspiron 13z is also outfitted with 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 500GB 5,400rpm hard drive.
Dell includes plenty of software on the Inspiron 13z, some of which you may want to simply remove, like desktop links to Ebay, preinstalled programs like a Bing toolbar, Blio and Zinio readers, and a selection of games from WildTangent. You'll also find Microsoft Office Starter 2010, a 30-day trial of McAfee Security Center, Nero and Skype. Dell throws in a number of proprietary offerings, like Dell's media programs MusicStage, PhotoStage, VideoStage and StageRemote. Dell also covers the Inspiron 13z with a one-year warranty.
Performance
The Inspiron 13z is equipped with the same ultra-low voltage 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-3317U processor seen in both the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 and the HP Envy 4-1043cl, paired with 6GB of RAM. Scoring 2,457 points in PCMark 7, the Inspiron pulled ahead of the ultraportable Editors' Choice Toshiba Portege R835-P88 (2,313 points), but fell behind both the Lenovo U310 (3,570) and the HP Envy 4-1043cl (3,962) despite the fact that all but the Toshiba are using the same model processor. Thanks to their common hardware, CineBench scores were nearly identical between the Inspiron 13z (2.39 points), the HP Envy 4 (2.38) and the Lenovo U310 (2.39), as were scores in Handbrake and Photoshop. For light video and photo editing, the Dell Inspiron 13z provides decent performance.
Because the Inspiron 13z relies on Intel's integrated graphics processing, most gaming is off the table. Though the Inspiron 13z did score 5,721 points and 3,164 points in 3D Mark 2006 (at 1,024-by-768 and 1,366-by-768 resolution, respectively), the thin laptop only produced 20 frames per second in Crysis at medium resolution, and was unable to run it at higher resolution, or run Lost Planet 2 at all.
While we were unable to run our usual battery-life benchmark test, MobileMark 2007, we did perform a video rundown test. With video being played continuously, the Dell Inspiron 13z's 49Wh battery lasted 5 hours and 5 minutes. We can't make a direct comparison to the results of our MobileMark test run on other systems, but with most scores ranging from 6 to 10 hours, it is safe to say that the Inspiron 13z will get you through most of a day, but not all of it.
The Dell Inspiron 13z is an affordable and able ultraportable, but some users will be irritated by the port covers that get in the way more often than not. The hardware puts it alongside some fine ultrabooks and ultraportables, but unlike the Editors' Choice Toshiba Portege R835-P88, which also offers extras like WiDi and an optical drive, the Inspiron 13z falls just a bit short of expectations.

It wasn?t as if Thomas Jefferson didn?t have more pressing matters to attend to. He was governor of Virginia, then minister plenipotenary to France. And, oh yes, there was the matter of writing the Declaration of Independence. Despite all these responsibilities, for more than a decade Jefferson was obsessed with a nasty theory of natural history coming out of the salons of Europe. He took it upon himself to correct the scientific record and fight a slander against his country?a slander that had political, philosophical, and economic consequences. Jefferson, the great polymath, didn?t fully realize what he was getting himself into; the ugly theory he was set on dismantling would engange many of the world?s finest minds long past his own death in 1826.
The trouble started with Count George-Louis Leclerc Buffon, curator of the King?s Natural History Cabinet in France and arguably the most famous scientist on the planet in 1749, when he began publishing volumes of what would become a 6,000-page encyclopedia of natural history called Histoire Naturelle. In it, he proposed what became known as Buffon?s theory of New World degeneracy. Buffon argued that because North America was a cold and wet clime, all species found there were weak, shriveled, and diminished?they were degenerate.
Buffon proclaimed that North America was a land of swamps, where life putrefied and rotted. Try to raise domesticated species?cattle, pigs, sheep, goats,whatever?in this place, Buffon proclaimed, and they, too, would degenerate, producing lines of puny, feeble offspring. Buffon claimed to see the effects of degeneracy on the indigenous people of the New World. Native Americans, Buffon wrote, were stupid, lazy savages who degenerated for the same reason that animals did?the cold and humidity. To add to the insult, the count argued that by failing to drain the swamps, Native Americans were responsible for promoting the wet climate that led to degeneration in the first place.
Today, we read Buffon?s ideas as absurd and offensive, but they caught on like wildfire, providing Europeans with a handy scientific justification for believing that their continent was superior to this New World that they felt threatened by. Histoire Naturelle was translated into a slew of languages, including German, Dutch, and English, and it was the talk of the salons. Soon others were parroting and expanding Buffon?s theory of New World degeneracy.
The French Abb? Guillaume-Thomas Raynal and the Dutch Abb? Cornelius De Pauw worshipped Buffon?s theory but thought it did not go far enough. They each wrote book-length treatises outlining how Europeans silly enough to move to America were damning themselves and their descendants to the pernicious effects of degeneracy. Raynal proclaimed that "America has not yet produced a good poet, an able mathematician, one man of genius in a single art or a single science.? At one point he even sponsored an essay contest in France on whether the discovery of America had been beneficial or harmful to the human race.
Someone in the fledgling United States was going to have to do something about all this. Enter Jefferson, the natural historian. ?Nature,? Jefferson wrote to Pierre-Samuel Dupont, ?intended me for the tranquil pursuits of science, rendering them my supreme delight.? Had it not been for ?the boisterous ocean of political passions,? Jefferson would likely have spent his time promoting science and losing himself in natural history, chemistry, archaeology, anthropology, agriculture, the velocity of water current, linguistics, meteorology, botany, the measure of latitude and longitude, astronomy, and physics, to name just some of his scientific passions.
The whole degeneracy theory riled Jefferson to the core. He respected Buffon?a man he called a ?celebrated Zoologist, who has added and is still adding, so many precious things to the treasures of science??but on the question of degeneracy, he thought the count had crossed a boundary that should not be crossed. How dare he use natural history in such a fashion??to damn an entire continent! Jefferson also understood the serious economic implications of Buffon?s theory: Why would Europeans trade with America, or immigrate to the New World, if Buffon and his cadre of degeneracy promulgators were correct? And so, starting in the late 1770s, Jefferson led a sustained scientific assault against Buffon?s theory of degeneracy. It was a two-pronged attack. The first volley appeared in a book.
The longest chapter of Jefferson?s one and only book, Notes on the State of Virginia, was devoted to debunking Buffon?s theory of degeneracy. There was no reason that differences between the New World and the Old should translate into degeneracy in the former, he wrote, ?as if both sides were not warmed by the same genial sun; as if a soil of the same chemical composition, was less capable of elaboration into animal nutriment. ? The truth is, that a Pigmy and a Patagonian, a Mouse and a Mammoth, derive their dimensions from the same nutritive juices.?
After attacking Buffon?s theoretical framework, Jefferson went after his data?were they accurate, and if not, why not? The theory rested largely on data collected by others, and Jefferson argued that the count?s sources had ?causally? collected their data, and what they wrote was based on hearsay. Jefferson challenged the veracity of the travelers upon whom Buffon relied: ?who were these travellers?? he asked. Were they reliable, and trustworthy like Buffon? ?No, they weren?t,? Jefferson concluded; they had already made up their minds that the Old World was superior to the New before they ever observed any animals, and so they could not be trusted. Jefferson took on each of Buffon?s claims about degeneracy, using a series of tables enumerating the weights of animals from Europe and America. The data, Jefferson showed, simply didn?t support this the dangerous theory Buffon was propounding.
Jefferson got some help from one of the other founding fathers. James Madison and Jefferson exchanged letters focused on issues such as whether and how to hold a Constitutional Convention, whether paper money should be adopted, and what to do about an empty treasury. In these personal correspondences, Madison also provided his friend with ammunition to counter the claims coming out of Europe. In one long letter to Jefferson, after addressing various pressing political issues and noting, ?I have a little itch to gain a smattering in chymistry,? Madison shared the results of an examination he had made of the weasel.

Droid RAZR M review
It’s been just over a year since Motorola took the wraps off of the Droid RAZR, the device the company was counting on to keep it competitive. And with an intense push by Verizon, the RAZR managed to hold its ground in 2012 against blockbuster competitors such as Samsung’s Galaxy line and HTC’s One series. And with its follow up RAZR Maxx, Motorola managed to finally break away from the pack into a niche that has attracted an almost cult-like following. For those craving as much juice as their battery can produce, there is simply no other alternative.
With its revamped RAZRs, Motorola opted to add a third device into the lineup — the Droid RAZR M. It’s an interesting choice, considering that Motorola could have simply dropped the price of the RAZR and turned it into the entry-level device, ala what Apple does with the iPhone. Instead, Motorola took the original RAZR, added next-generation internals, shrunk it down without touching the screen, and slapped on a $99 pricetag. The result is a phone that impresses in both performance and aesthetics, and raises the bar for what entry level smartphones can achieve.
  The RAZR M's performance is on-par with other flagship Android devices thanks to its top-of-the-line S4 processor. The M's size is compact without sacrificing the integrity or beauty of the healthy-sized 4.3-inch display. Motorola's hardware is unmatched in terms of quality and beauty. |  The RAZR M's battery life isn't all it's cracked up to be, and its cameras are poor in both performance and quality. The M's display is of mere qHD resolution, a noticeable downgrade from 720p technology. |
