What will Apple announce on Monday?

13 hrs.

Apple's?annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicks off Monday?with a keynote presentation,?and there's?plenty of speculation regarding what might be announced. Here's a rundown of what could be revealed.

iOS 6
Apple often previews major iOS updates during its summer developer fest, a?global crossroads for Mac and iOS programmers.?Apple announced iOS 5 during WWDC 2011?(though it didn't ship it until the iPhone 4S launched last October).?

Additionally, OS X Mountain Lion, the latest version of Apple's desktop operating system, is due to hit virtual shelves this summer???and?an iOS update would complement that perfectly.

Based on recent reports, the next version of iOS will borrow a lot of features from the upcoming release of OS X Mountain Lion. It may include iCloud Tabs (which will allow users to sync browsing sessions across devices)?and Mail VIPs (which allow you to mark certain individuals as important so that their messages are displayed more prominently).?

There may also be a "Do Not Disturb" feature (which will allow you to temporarily toggle off notifications, alerts and banners when you need a bit of quiet time), Facebook integration, and a totally redesigned Maps app which may include 3-D geographical features.

New iPhone
With the exception of the iPhone 4S (which was released in October 2011), every new iPhone model has hit shelves in either June or July. So it's no surprise that folks are still optimistic regarding the next-generation Apple smartphone being announced at WWDC.

Unfortunately for those hopeful folks,?most recent reports shoot down the idea?that the next iPhone will be shown off during the WWDC keynote.

New iPad
Let's be realistic here: We just barely finished peeling the protective film off of?our third-generation iPads. Despite scattered?rumors of "mini" iPads and the like, chances are extremely low that we'll see Apple announce any new tablets at WWDC ?? or until next year, for that matter.

New iPod
Apple typically upgrades its various iPod lines all at once, and currently all of the company's media player models are ripe for a refresh. However, a major overhaul of the flagship?iPod Touch tends to follow a major overhaul of the iPhone. So the odds are?that we'll hear more about this around the time of the next iPhone's expected release, likely this fall.

iTV
If I had a buck for every rumor I've heard about the mysterious Apple iTV over the last year or so, I would be writing this blog post on a diamond-encrusted MacBook Air.

I call the so-called?iTV "mysterious" because we're not absolutely certain about anything when it comes to this device. We?have no idea what it would look like or even what its actual name would be. We don't know its specs. Heck, unlike the inevitable?next iPhone or iPad or MacBook, we don't even know if this device will exist anytime soon.

We just have some vague speculation which suggests that we might see the?iTV ??a magically simple yet super smart television which will allow us to control our media by speaking, gesturing or using our mobile devices ??at the end of 2012, not at WWDC.

What we might hear about at WWDC though, could be the software platform which will run on the iTV. But even that seems unlikely.

New iMac
It's been nearly a full year since the iMac was last updated. This particular Apple product is past-due for a refresh and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw that happen sometime this summer (though probably later in the season, and likely?not?during WWDC).

New MacBook Air
There have been so many rumors about the MacBook Air's future over the last few months that it's tough to keep track. Most folks seem to be under the impression that the 11- and 13-inch models currently on the market will be joined by an ultra-slim 15-inch laptop sometime soon. While I'm not very confident about that little bit of speculation, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Apple might put out a MacBook Air with a larger screen this year. If?typical product release schedules?are anything to go by,?this would take place sometime in the fall.

New MacBook Pro
According to the folks at MacRumors, roughly 260 days pass between new versions of the popular laptop. By June, it will have been 240 days.?Does that mean we'll see a new MacBook Pro at WWDC??

It's somewhat possible.

Bloomberg reports that "people with knowledge of [Apple's] plans" suggest that the Cupertino-based company will?be unveiling a new lineup of thinner MacBook Pros which will run high-definition Retina displays, like those found on the iPhone and iPad. ?The appearance of apps compatible with such displays in the Mac App is, of course, only helping support this report.

The new laptops are also rumored to rely on flash-based memory, for the sake of shorter startup times and extended battery life.?

New Mac Pro
According to 9to5 Mac, Apple may finally update the Mac Pro, its?its high-end workstation.?It's been about two years since this line saw?any major upgrades, so it's not unthinkable that Apple might be looking to refresh it. Reports that Apple has begun pulling current Mac Pro stock from its stores don't hurt that theory either.

The takeaway
This year's WWDC keynote will most likely bring us software-related announcements?? iOS 6 and perhaps the iTV platform. There is a chance that we'll see some redesigned laptops as well.?

But odds are high that we'll be waiting a while longer for a new iPhone.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Manhattan Stealth Touch Mouse

The Manhattan Stealth Touch Mouse ($69.99 list) is the latest touch-enabled computer mouse, the likes of which have been steadily on the rise ever since Apple introduced its Magic Mouse ($69.99 direct, 3.5 stars) a few years back. Unlike a typical mouse, this species of mice relies exclusively on a touch-sensitive surface, so instead of clicking with your fingers, you tap and swipe as you would a touch-screen. In the case of the Manhattan Stealth Touch Mouse, the possibilities of the touch-sensitive surface are simultaneously realized and squandered. On the plus side, the absence of right- and left-click buttons yields a stylish minimalist design that radiates sophistication; it's like the champagne of computer mice. On the down side, though, the Stealth Touch is fairly limited in terms of functionality. Beyond the standard left- and right- click and vertical and horizontal scrolling, as well as a "presentation mode" that allows the mouse to act like a remote, there's not much else the Stealth Touch can do. Two-finger gestures for enhancing Web browsing or zooming are sorely missing. The end result is a mouse that, albeit gorgeous, comes with a somewhat steep price tag that's somewhat difficult to justify.

Design
The first thing you'll notice about the Stealth Touch, even before you install it (an endeavor barely worth mentioning, because it requires little beyond plugging in the dongle and waiting for the driver to install itself) is its unique design. You'd be hard pressed to find a mouse that lives up to its name more than the Stealth Touch. It's an object lesson in minimalism. Unlike the Apple Magic Mouse and theMicrosoft Arc Touch ($67.95 list, 3.5 stars), there isn't a dedicated touch scroll. Rather, the Stealth Touch's streamlined aesthetic is more on par with the Logitech M600 Touch Mouse ($69.99 list, 4 stars) since there aren't any buttons to be found on this mouse. But the Stealth Touch takes the minimalist approach one step further; whereas the Logitech M600 is adorned with a dark grey color pattern, the Stealth Touch's all-black matte finish?dubbed "SilkTouch" coating by Manhattan?resembles an onyx. The only noticeable design is a Manhattan insignia and logo next to your thumb (assuming you're right-handed) that glows a faint blue light once it's turned on. Otherwise, the Stealth Touch mouse could easily pass for one of those hide-a-key rocks.

Of course, you won't be hiding any keys in this mouse. You can, however, hide the included USB dongle in a slot located on the underside, so the Stealth Touch can be taken on the go without any worries. Adjacent to the dongle slot is a compartment for the two AAA batteries (included) as well as two parenthetically-shaped glide strips that allow smooth movement on most surfaces. And oh, how it glides. The Stealth Touch feels as good as it looks. Its slipper-shaped body fit comfortably in my palm, and the "SilkTouch" coating provided a smooth yet textured grip for my fingers, allowing them to slide gently along the surface. All of this makes for a comfortable mouse that, while initially odd-feeling, soon felt surprisingly zen-like.

The fact that a few terse sentences sum up the Stealth Touch's design is a testament to its minimalism. Of all the mice I've seen, it's easily the best-looking and quite possibly the most post-modern in the sense that it simultaneously challenges the notion of what a mouse should look like while adhering to its basic aesthetic. But, alas, I'm not an art critic, so as much as I like the Stealth Touch's appearance, it's equally important to see what it can do.

Performance
So what can the Stealth Touch do? As it turns out, pretty much the same things that an ordinary mouse can. While simplicity was clearly the goal behind the Stealth Touch, functionality was compromised in this pursuit. Unlike the current Editors' Choice for touch mice, theMicrosoft Touch Mouse ($79.95 list, 4.5 stars), the Stealth Touch does not offer full gesture support, so don't expect to swipe through pages on your Web browser. And while I appreciate the minimalist aesthetic engendered by the Stealth Touch's tap-sensitive surface, the absence of traditional clicking has its drawbacks. Beyond the fact that it's initially quite strange not having the reassuringly tactile "click" accompany my actions, more intuitive controls, like dragging and dropping or selecting text, never felt quite right. This is mainly due to the fact that the Stealth Touch requires a double tap for each, which, in the case of dragging and dropping icons, has the inadvertent effect of opening them at times. With this exception, though, the Stealth Touch performed other basic mouse functions like clicking and scrolling, with ease.

The Stealth Touch also utilizes what Manhattan has dubbed "Curve-Touch" technology, which detects when the mouse is no longer placed on a surface. When this is the case, the mouse turns into a makeshift wireless presenter that lets you scroll through documents, web sites, and PowerPoint slides by horizontally sliding your thumb. Once placed back on to a solid surface, "Curve-Touch" technology causes the Stealth Touch to automatically transition back to its regular operating mode. Nominally speaking, it's a nice feature, though not something I'd consider particularly useful in most day-to-day settings.

Aside from its touch-sensitive surface, the Manhattan Stealth Touch mouse is at its core an ordinary mouse. For this reason, it falls somewhere between decent and fantastic, as its incredible design is undermined by its limited functionality and steep price tag. For a touch mouse that really harnesses this innovative click-free technology, the Editors' Choice Microsoft Touch Mouse is still the one to beat, even if it isn't the prettiest.

One a day: Suicide surge among U.S. troops

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Suicides are surging among America's troops, averaging nearly one a day this year ? the fastest pace in the nation's decade of war.

The 154 suicides for active-duty troops in the first 155 days of the year far outdistance the U.S. forces killed in action in Afghanistan ? about 50 percent more ? according to Pentagon statistics obtained by The Associated Press.

The numbers reflect a military burdened with wartime demands from Iraq and Afghanistan that have taken a greater toll than foreseen a decade ago. The military also is struggling with increased sexual assaults, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and other misbehavior.

Because suicides had leveled off in 2010 and 2011, this year's upswing has caught some officials by surprise.

The reasons for the increase are not fully understood. Among explanations, studies have pointed to combat exposure, post-traumatic stress, misuse of prescription medications and personal financial problems. Army data suggest soldiers with multiple combat tours are at greater risk of committing suicide, although a substantial proportion of Army suicides are committed by soldiers who never deployed.

The unpopular war in Afghanistan is winding down with the last combat troops scheduled to leave at the end of 2014. But this year has seen record numbers of soldiers being killed by Afghan troops, and there also have been several scandals involving U.S. troop misconduct.

The 2012 active-duty suicide total of 154 through June 3 compares to 130 in the same period last year, an 18 percent increase. And it's more than the 136.2 suicides that the Pentagon had projected for this period based on the trend from 2001-2011. This year's January-May total is up 25 percent from two years ago, and it is 16 percent ahead of the pace for 2009, which ended with the highest yearly total thus far.

Suicide totals have exceeded U.S. combat deaths in Afghanistan in earlier periods, including for the full years 2008 and 2009.

The suicide pattern varies over the course of a year, but in each of the past five years the trend through May was a reliable predictor for the full year, according to a chart based on figures provided by the Armed Forces Medical Examiner.

The numbers are rising among the 1.4 million active-duty military personnel despite years of effort to encourage troops to seek help with mental health problems. Many in the military believe that going for help is seen as a sign of weakness and thus a potential threat to advancement.

Kim Ruocco, widow of Marine Maj. John Ruocco, a helicopter pilot who hanged himself in 2005 between Iraq deployments, said he was unable to bring himself to go for help.

"He was so afraid of how people would view him once he went for help," she said in an interview at her home in suburban Boston. "He thought that people would think he was weak, that people would think he was just trying to get out of redeploying or trying to get out of service, or that he just couldn't hack it - when, in reality, he was sick. He had suffered injury in combat and he had also suffered from depression and let it go untreated for years. And because of that, he's dead today."

Ruocco is currently director of suicide prevention programs for the military support organization Tragedy Assistance Programs, or TAPS. She joined the group after her husband's suicide, and she organized its first program focused on support for families of suicide victims.

Jackie Garrick, head of a newly established Defense Suicide Prevention Office at the Pentagon, said in an interview Thursday that the suicide numbers this year are troubling.

"We are very concerned at this point that we are seeing a high number of suicides at a point in time where we were expecting to see a lower number of suicides," she said, adding that the weak U.S. economy may be confounding preventive efforts even as the pace of military deployments eases.

Garrick said experts are still struggling to understand suicidal behavior.

"What makes one person become suicidal and another not is truly an unknown," she said.

Dr. Stephen N. Xenakis, a retired Army brigadier general and a practicing psychiatrist, said the suicides reflect the level of tension as the U.S. eases out of Afghanistan though violence continues.

"It's a sign in general of the stress the Army has been under over the 10 years of war," he said in an interview. "We've seen before that these signs show up even more dramatically when the fighting seems to go down and the Army is returning to garrison."

But Xenakis said he worries that many senior military officers do not grasp the nature of the suicide problem.

A glaring example of that became public when a senior Army general recently told soldiers considering suicide to "act like an adult."

Maj. Gen. Dana Pittard, commander of the 1st Armored Division, last month retracted ? but did not apologize for ? a statement in his Army blog in January. He had written, "I have now come to the conclusion that suicide is an absolutely selfish act." He also wrote, "''I am personally fed up with soldiers who are choosing to take their own lives so that others can clean up their mess. Be an adult, act like an adult, and deal with your real-life problems like the rest of us." He did also counsel soldiers to seek help.

His remarks drew a public rebuke from the Army, which has the highest number of suicides and called his assertions "clearly wrong." Last week the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, said he disagrees with Pittard "in the strongest possible terms."

The military services have set up confidential telephone hotlines, placed more mental health specialists on the battlefield, added training in stress management, invested more in research on mental health risk and taken other measures.

The Marines established a counseling service dubbed "DStress line," a toll-free number that troubled Marines can call anonymously. They also can use a Marine website to chat online anonymously with a counselor.

The Marines arguably have had the most success recently in lowering their suicide numbers, which are up slightly this year but are roughly in line with levels of the past four years. The Army's numbers also are up slightly. The Air Force has seen a spike, to 32 through June 3 compared to 23 at the same point last year. The Navy is slightly above its 10-year trend line but down a bit from 2011.

As part of its prevention strategy, the Navy has published a list of "truths" about suicide.

"Most suicidal people are not psychotic or insane," it says. "They might be upset, grief-stricken, depressed or despairing."

In a report published in January the Army said the true impact of its prevention programs is unknown.

"What is known is that all Army populations ... are under increased stress after a decade of war," it said, adding that if not for prevention efforts the Army's suicide totals might have been as much as four times as high.

Marine Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia, the senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently issued a video message to all military members in which he noted that suicides "are sadly on the rise."

"From private to general, we shoulder an obligation to look and listen for signs and we stand ready to intervene and assist our follow service member or battle buddy in time of need," Battaglia said.

The suicide numbers began surging in 2006. They soared in 2009 and then leveled off before climbing again this year. The statistics include only active-duty troops, not veterans who returned to civilian life after fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. Nor does the Pentagon's tally include non-mobilized National Guard or Reserve members.

The renewed surge in suicides has caught the attention of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Last month he sent an internal memo to the Pentagon's top civilian and military leaders in which he called suicide "one of the most complex and urgent problems" facing the Defense Department, according to a copy provided to the AP.

Panetta touched on one of the most sensitive aspects of the problem: the stigma associated seeking help for mental distress. This is particularly acute in the military.

"We must continue to fight to eliminate the stigma from those with post-traumatic stress and other mental health issues," Panetta wrote, adding that commanders "cannot tolerate any actions that belittle, haze, humiliate or ostracize any individual, especially those who require or are responsibly seeking professional services."

Pandemic preparedness

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2012) ? In 2009, the H1N1 "swine flu" pandemic struck, infecting millions and killing more than 18,000 worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Though less severe than initially feared, the pandemic highlighted the potential threat of deadly viruses emerging from animals into humans, and the importance of quick and effective public health intervention.

In a globalized world, the probability of a severe pandemic striking are high, according to Lauren Ancel Meyers, an expert in infectious disease epidemiology at The University of Texas at Austin. A biologist by training, Meyers applies mathematical models and computer programs to understand, analyze and predict the transmission of diseases based on a large number of factors.

During the H1N1 outbreak, Meyers worked with officials in national and international public health agencies to simulate the spread of the disease based on properties of the flu virus, demographic information, traffic patterns, and other data. Her models illustrated how the disease might spread and how the placement of preventative measures, like vaccines and antivirals, could mitigate the pandemic.

Meyer's efforts to enhance data-driven science were aided by the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), a leading advanced computing center located at the University. Meyers collaborated with TACC staff and used the center's systems to forecast the infections as the pandemic progressed, and to develop visualizations that vividly depicted the spread of the disease.

In 2010, Meyers began discussions with public health authorities at the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to continue the project. "They were interested in working with us to build quantitative tools to support decision making during pandemics," Meyers said.

Working with a team of UT researchers from biology, mathematics, statistics, engineering and computing, Meyers led the development of the Texas Pandemic Flu Toolkit, a web-based service that simulates the spread of pandemic flu through the state, forecasts the number of flu hospitalizations, and determines where and when to place ventilators to minimize fatalities.

The toolkit can be used in emergency situations to guide real-time decision-making. For example, public health officials might use the forecaster tool to determine when a pandemic might crest and what kind of magnitude they might see in terms of infections and hospitalizations, which can then be communicated to local authorities.

"While the forecasts will not be exact, they give a rough idea of how many people will be hospitalized around the state and when an epidemic may peak. Such information can lead to more timely and effective control measures," Meyers said.

The toolkit can also be used proactively to develop scenarios of probable pandemics and to see how they may impact different locations, age groups, and demographics. Various interventions, such as antivirals, vaccines, and public health announcements, can be input into the forecasts to determine their effect at different stages in the pandemic's evolution.

Importantly, TACC's powerful supercomputers allow data to be processed, crunched, and distributed to a large number of stakeholders simultaneously.

"Our methods often require rapid evaluation of a large number of possible solutions, which would be intractable without high performance computers," Meyers explained.

Bruce Clements, director of community preparedness with the DSHS, said the project provides Texas with an unprecedented ability for pandemic simulation and forecasting.

"The toolkit allows us to respond more effectively by providing the ability to quickly adjust predictive variables as we gather information. We can use this information to focus response efforts and optimize resources," Clements said. "These same tools may be used in training and exercises to better prepare our public health workforce."

Much of the data that drives the toolkit comes from the Outpatient Influenza-Like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet). Texas ILINet has 134 enrolled providers who voluntarily report outpatient influenza-like illness by age group to the CDC on a weekly basis. This information is fed into the toolkit and grounds the simulations in real data. Historical information from past pandemics is also included, as are factors like humidity predictions and school calendars, both of which play a large role in the evolution of a pandemic.

David Morton from the UT Cockrell School of Engineering led the Texas ventilator-stockpiling portion of the project. A significant fraction of influenza patients infected during a pandemic require ventilators. Despite the fact that there is a strategic national stockpile of ventilators -- about 6,000 -- no one knows whether it is right-sized under a variety of different scenarios.

The tool takes information from the forecaster and projects where ventilators should be optimally placed to limit mortality. In essence, it provides the best solution to a bad situation.

"If we have a mild or moderate pandemic then we have ample ventilators. But if we have a severe pandemic, then we're grossly short," Morton said. "Officials knew that, but the thing they valued here was that we could actually quantify how short are we."

In the case of a pandemic, Texas would need all 6,000 ventilators; ten times as many would be required nationwide.

Meyers, Morton, and UT graduate students, Tom Hladish and HsinChan (Neo) Huang, developed the domain-specific aspects of the toolkit. However, it was TACC research associate, Greg P. Johnson, who translated the researchers' algorithms into a web-based interface that provides information-rich data visualizations directly to a user's desktop.

"Greg did a phenomenal job of translating our ideas into extremely user-friendly and transparent tools that surpassed all of our expectations," Meyers said.

Meyers and company unveiled the toolkit to DSHS officials in late 2011. Since that time, public health officials in Texas have been able to log on to the portal, enter a series of parameters, and receive clear and dynamic maps, graphs, and charts showing the results based on various conditions and inputs.

Meyers continues to meet with the CDC and the Texas DSHS to discuss ideas for extending the toolkit.

"These tools are designed to be accessible and to help officials make more quantitatively grounded policy decisions," Meyers said. "The user friendly web-based interfaces help to translate basic science into practical inputs for public health preparedness and response."

Data-driven science is a big deal these days. Recently, the U.S. government committed hundreds of millions of dollars toward enabling new applications that can harness data streams effectively. The Texas Pandemic Flu toolkit shows how this new paradigm will affect public health decision-making. For now, it remains one of the few pandemic-fighting tools available to public health officials.

Said Meyers: "We've just scratched the surface in terms of developing quantitative tools that improve our ability to track and control infectious disease outbreaks."

Lincoln Mitchell: The Bad News for Labor from Wisconsin

The defeat of the effort to recall Scott Walker from his post as governor of Wisconsin is less of a victory for the Republican Party, or even a defeat for the Democratic Party, as it is a defeat for the labor movement. Walker, after all, has been a particular anathema to organized labor as his radical anti-union policies have drawn attention and opposition from labor unions and their supporters across the country. For progressives, recalling Walker would have been a major victory, but for labor, the stakes were even higher.

Walker only retained his seat by a margin of about 7%, which is closer than many expected, but in a highly competitive state like Wisconsin, still a significant margin. Labor made an all out effort to defeat Walker, spending a great deal of both local and national resources, but they still came up short. This will have two damaging impacts on labor. First, it is likely that after fighting off this recall attempt, Walker will feel newly empowered to continue to go after organized labor. This may prove to be a mistake for Walker, but at least in the short run, will make life difficult for labor unions, and the workers they represent in Wisconsin. It is also likely that anti-union officials in other states will feel similarly emboldened by the results from Wisconsin.

Second, Walker's victory also raises concerns about labor's ability to deliver for the Democratic Party. Labor is, of course, an enormous institutional player in the Democratic Party, able to produce votes, volunteers and money for candidates from city council to president. In many cases the economic interests of the labor movement and the Democratic Party are very similar; and without votes from members of labor unions, Democratic candidates win considerably less frequently.

Members of labor unions often come out in support of Democratic candidates, but significantly, this is not evidence of labor's ability to deliver votes. Many African American members of labor unions, for example, voted for Obama, but this is clearly a case of correlation between union membership and support for Obama. A direct, or even indirect, causality would be even harder to prove. This week's election in Wisconsin highlights the question of labor's ability to deliver votes because this race, while important to all Democrats, was of particular import to labor union members.

To conclude from this that the Democratic Party does not need organized labor, or that labor unions are of no value to the Democratic Party, would be deeply wrong. The Democratic Party and organized labor, due to intertwined history and interests, as well as contemporary political and strategic realities, continue to have fates which are linked. The Republican assault on labor, of which Walker's attacks are only the most recent, have been bad for labor unions and the workers they represent, but have also been bad for the Democratic Party. Similarly, the inability of the Democratic Party to hold onto its white working class base for what is now close to half a century has contributed to the weakening of labor unions and workers' rights more generally.

Given all this, for the Democratic Party questioning the ability of labor to deliver votes, particularly swing votes that would not otherwise go democratic seems like a risky endeavor that, on balance, is probably not worth doing. If the Democratic leadership confronts the notion that labor's impact on elections may be overstated, there is no particular upside for doing this. Labor and the Democrats will still be closely tied together; the Democrats will still need support from labor; and probably most significantly, there are no institution that can fill in for labor in this capacity.

From a strategic angle, it is critical that Democratic leaders nonetheless understand the limitations of the labor movement today. Candidate Barack Obama understood this in 2008, particularly in the primaries when he did not enjoy early support from much of organized labor, but was still able to win. The lesson from Wisconsin is a similar one, that while support from labor is desirable, it is not, on its own, enough to ensure victory or anything close to it. For Democrats, labor support has been a constant and should be understood that way, part of the coalition, but not in a stand alone way as significant as might be initially thought.

There are many reasons why the labor movement could not pull off a victory in Wisconsin, but the fact that they could not is what is most significant. Union leaders, following this defeat have few options other than working for the next race which will be in November of this year. The Democratic Party has an analogous lack of options regarding labor and must do what it can to strengthen labor so that it can again become the powerful partner the Democratic Party needs.

Contrary to popular belief, Monday?s ruling in Bounty Grievance No. 2 has yet to release Stephen Burbank from currently active service to the NFL and NFLPA.? Last week, ESPN?s Chris Mortensen reported that the NFLPA filed a grievance regarding the question of whether the Saints would have to pay quarterback Drew Brees 120 percent of his 2012 salary or 144 percent of it under the franchise tag in 2013.

The May 29 request from lawyer Jeffrey Kessler, a copy of which PFT has obtained, argues that use of the franchise tag by the Saints on Brees in 2013 would trigger the higher tender, on the basis that it will be the third time the franchise tag has been applied to Brees.

It?s a difference of more than $3.9 million in 2013.

The filing came four days after Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports flagged the issue.? The timetable for a hearing and an eventual resolution isn?t known, but Kessler has requested that the issue be expedited.

For those of you (there may be two or three) who are interested in the potential issues that will be raised, you are cordially invited to continue reading.

The most immediate problem with the grievance is that the dispute isn?t, as the legal types would call it, ripe, because the amount of Brees? 2013 franchise tender isn?t relevant until 2013.? Though Kessler explains that the disagreement over Brees? 2013 franchise tender is affecting negotiations on a long-term deal, concern that the Saints have dug in on their position as to what the tender would be in 2013 when making multi-year offers doesn?t compel a resolution now.

If the Saints use the franchise tag on Brees in 2013 and their interpretation is incorrect, Brees will be entitled to nearly $4 million more in 2013.? For 2012, the question has zero bearing on Brees? compensation.

Apart from whether the issue regarding 2013 pay should be resolved before 2013, the language of the CBA doesn?t seem to support the argument that the 144-percent tender applies when a player is tagged for the third time in his career, even if he has only been tagged once or twice by his current team.? Kessler argues that the key phrase in Article 10, Section 2(b) ? ?Any Club that designates a player as a Franchise Player for the third time? ? isn?t specific to one team because the CBA uses the word ?a? instead of ?its.?? But that may not be enough of a difference to expand the phrase ?for the third time? beyond the team that currently holds the players rights.? If the calculation were driven by the number of times a player had been tagged during his career, the language easily could have been crafted to make that more clear, with wording like, ?If a player is designated as a Franchise Player for the third time.?

Also cutting against Brees? argument is a separate portion of Article 10.? Section 15(c) sets forth the procedure the season after a player sits out the entirety of a season under the franchise tag.? In the next league year, the franchise-tagged player is subject to compensation of only a first-round pick and a third-round pick, and the exclusive tag cannot be used.? Then, Section 15(c) says this:? ?If such a player is designated as a Franchise Player for a third time, the terms of Section 2(b) above shall apply.?

It?s a subtle point, but reading Section 15(c) in conjunction with Section 2(b) points to a conclusion that the analysis is based on use of the tag by the team, not on the total career use of the tag on the player.

That interpretation also meshes with a key portion of Section 2(b) that never will be relevant to quarterbacks.? In 2006, the CBA was amended to dissaude teams from squatting on one player for more than two straight years by escalating the franchise tender to quarterback money when the tag is used the third time.? That?s how linebacker Karlos Dansby escaped Arizona after two years under the franchise tag.? Under Brees? argument, however, Dansby would be entitled to quarterback money the first time the Dolphins would use the tag on him.? That outcome doesn?t seem to mesh with the spirit of the franchise tag.

Of course, and as usual, what I think doesn?t matter.? Burbank will have to resolve this one, subject to review by the Appeals Panel.? The best news for the Saints remains that, if Brees is worried about the amount of his franchise tender in 2013, he must be planning to show up in 2012, even if he doesn?t get a long-term deal.

?

Theatre in the Park will present a community-theater production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, a 1955 Southern Gothic masterpiece of Modern Drama written by Thomas Lanier ?Tennessee? Williams(1911-83), on June 8-10, 14-17, and 22-24 in the Ira David Wood III Pullen Park Theatre in Raleigh, NC.

?I first saw the show after watching a performance that Sir Laurence Olivier did as Big Daddy four years ago in a 1970s production,? recalls director Ira David Wood IV. ?I was already a Tennessee Williams fan; but after watching Olivier, I purchased the script the next day.?

He adds, ?With the three lead characters being so intense and dramatic, [Cat on a Hot Tin Roof] opens a lot of doors for a cast and director to make the show a powerhouse. It?s a script that ? when executed correctly ? will have the audience on the edge of their seats.

?Rob Rainbolt and Sarah Bousquet as Brick and Maggie [Pollitt] make it a pure joy to come into work and all of us tackle and take a huge bite out of fiery drama together with pure passion and smiles on our faces every night,? says Ira Wood.

Sparks will also fly when Triangle theater legend John T. ?Jack? Hall, as Big Daddy Pollitt, confronts his son Brick and daughter-in-law Maggie about a variety of issues, but especially their mendacity (lies) when they try conceal the sorry state of their childless marriage. The Theatre in the Park cast also includes Annabel Bloom, Dempsey Bond III, Randy Jordan, Brook North, Bonnie Roe, Mike Rumble, Erin Tito, JaCynthia Wallace, and Noah Daniel Zevin.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof made its Broadway debut, directed by Elia Kazan, on March 24, 1955 at the Morosco Theatre, where it played for 694 performances before closing on Nov. 17, 1956. That original Broadway production starred Barbara Bel Geddes as Margaret Pollitt, a.k.a. Maggie the Cat; Ben Gazzara as her husband Brick; Burl Ives and Mildred Dunnock as his parents Big Daddy and Big Mama Pollitt; Pat Hingle as Brick?s brother Gooper, a.k.a. Brother Man; Madeleine Sherwood as Gooper?s wife Mae, a.k.a. Sister Woman; R. G. Armstrong as Dr. Baugh; and Fred Stewart as the Rev. Tooker.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof won the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; and was nominated for four 1956 Tony Awards?, including Best Play, Best Director, Best Actress in a Play (Barbara Bel Geddes), and Best Scenic Design (Jo Mielziner).

The 1958 motion-picture version of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was directed by Richard Brooks, who co-wrote the screenplay with James Poe. It starred Elizabeth Taylor as Maggie, Paul Newman as Brick, Burl Ives as Big Daddy, Judith Anderson as Big Mama, Jack Carson as Gooper, Madeleine Sherwood as Mae, Larry Gates as Dr. Baugh, and Vaughn Taylor as Deacon Davis. The film received six 1959 Academy Award nominations, including nominations for Best Picture; Best Director; Best Actor in a Leading Role (Paul Newman); Best Actress in a Leading Role (Elizabeth Taylor); Best Cinematography, Color (William H. Daniels); and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.

Theatre in the Park director Ira Wood notes that Cat on a Hot Tin Roof takes place in 1955 in a setting of ?Antebellum Decay? in Mississippi in the old family home on the Pollitt plantation, surrounded by thousands of acres of land. Wood notes, ?Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ? focuses on sexual desire, mendacity, depression, and facing death and alcoholism with a marriage ?on the rocks.??

In addition to director Ira Wood, the Theatre in the Park creative team for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof includes assistant director Cody Cunningham, technical director and set and lighting designer Stephen J. Larson, costume designer Shawn Stewart-Larson, sound designer Will Mikes, and stage manager Christine Rapp.

?With the cast we have,? claims Ira Wood, ?[Cat on a Hot Tin Roof] promises to be a powerhouse of a production. Once the play begins, a metaphorical steel cage drops; and we get to see sparks fly between individually dynamic characters.

?Some may argue it?s hard to not just float by with such wonderful dialogue by Mr. Williams. This is just simply not the case,? says Wood. ?The emotional level of the cast is always in high demand to be on a 10, and they have to bring it night after night and keep flexing the muscles that are not just on their bodies but in their hearts and souls. It can be an exhausting process for the cast; but it?s paying off for them, and will certainly pay off for the audience to enjoy.?

He adds, ?In this production, the gears can shift so dramatically watching Sarah Bousquet and Rob Rainbolt, playing Maggie and Brick, that you may fear for Maggie?s life in one moment, and in the next 30 seconds wonder if they will just start making love. There are also tension breakers with natural comedy, which occurs in the dialogue with Brook North and Erin Tito?s take on Gooper and Mae without forcing to get a laugh. It?s refreshing as you are watching a marriage on the rocks and a shift in power (quite Shakespearean) with the illness of Big Daddy (Jack Hall).

?Another challenge [in staging Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for 21st century theatergoers] is how familiar the show is to an audience,? says Ira Wood. ?However, although the audience may be familiar with the story, or may have seen another production on film or on stage before, the aim is to keep the audience engaged with the special differences and surprises this particular production is already promising to have.?

Theatre in the Park presents CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at 7:30 p.m. June 8 and 9, 3 p.m. June 10, 7:30 p.m. June 14-16, 3 p.m. June 17, 7:30 p.m. June 22 and 23, and 3 p.m. June 24 in the Ira David Wood III Pullen Park Theatre, 107 Pullen Rd., Raleigh, North Carolina 27607.

Greetings and salutations

I am not exactly new at r/p, I have been creating characters and stories online through instant message services since 1998. Unfortunately as time progresses all the messenger services have found ways to make it near impossible to find other players. I have come across this site by accident and thought I might give it a try.
I do seem to have a black thumb for group r/ps though and so I tend to stick to one on one only. I don't know what it is, but every group i have tried joining has disbanded withing a month of asking me in.
My preferaance is to play Yaoi characters, and none of them like to be in cushy story lines. I love angst, depth, and prefer characters who have the ability to be intelligent but not over the top arrogant. I can't stand the "My **** is bigger than yours" type of r/p either. I don't play to fight battles or prove my character can outdo yours (quite the contrary, mine have false ego's- they tend to lose every time but try to make it sound like they will win) so if your game is to try and outdo me via battle or some other ego trip basis then please, don't bother.
I have alot of ideas of my own, but I think as of late I would enjoy not running the game lol. I am running all my offline games so I need to have fun by having my character off balance and not knowing what the results of his actions might be in the end.
I know this is a rather long "heya, how ya doin!?" but I felt the need to explain a bit of my tastes and possible interactions to come. I try to be very nice and open minded, even to those new at r/p, but I do have a limit to my patience as well. I won't play with someone who doesn't try to be descriptive and go past the one line responses after a few sessions/posts. I understand that when someone starts it might not be easy to come up with long posts, but after a week or two you should be at least trying.
I might join a group, but I am not used to this type of gaming, so be patient with me.
Thanks much-
The Emerald Dragon-
Iason

This can be largely as a result of growing quantity of services that are obtainable to smaller small business owners, to allow them to keep their company running.

There truly isn?t any guidelines for when the term compact business is utilised, having said that it is actually simply defined as a company which has a little quantity of personnel. How handful of workers is debatable, and the definition of when a company adjustments from a small company to a larger corporation varies each by country and industry. This number is generally much less then 100 workers.

Cat Euthanization Surge at Wichita Falls Animal Services Center

During the spring animal officials typically see an increase in puppies and kittens.

But in Wichita Falls, city shelter officials say the spike has been overwhelming with cats.

And as you'll see... it's causing deadly consequences.

Officials say inside the Wichita Falls Animal Services Center is a catastrophe!

Cages full of cats and kittens and more are constantly being dropped of.

"They're coming in by the boxes. The the totes. It's dozens of kittens at a time. We

We euthanize usually three times a week. It's the worst part of our job here at Animal Services. It's hard on our staff that has to do that task," says Animal Services Administrator Katrena Mitchell.

But that task is being done more than people realize.

Last month, more than 352 cats arrived at the Animal Services Center.

And staff euthanized 314 of those animals because they were either sick or had no room for them.

Those numbers are a staggering increase over may of last year when the center received 190 cats and euthaized 169.

It's enough to make you cry but there is a push to reduce the number of deaths.

Adoptable cats here are transferred to the cat house at the Humane Society of Wichita County, which is also packed.

This shelter has nearly 50 very young kittens that are now in 10 foster homes.

"They're fostering momma's with kittens, bottle fed kittens and just baby kittens that are weaned but just do better in a home," says Teresa Sandall, the cast foster coordinator at the Humane Society of Wichita County.

The push is to keep these pets alive so they can find the perfect home but officials say that can only happen if cat owners take responsibility.

"At least get them spayed and neutered so we don't have kittens and kittens and kittens and kittens," says Mitchell.

To try an get more animals adopted the Animal Services Center will participate in National No Kill Day, which is June 11, 2012.

So, instead of euthanizing any pets they will adopt them out all day, as well as on Saturday, June 9, 2012.

Cars with Bad Auto Repair Records | Check Out Cars

Posted in June 3, 2012 ? 8:39 pmh.Mike DofferComments Off

Unfortunately as cars get older they may require some auto repair. It?s good to know some of the common issues that could go wrong with your car. As a general rule, the older your car the more possibilities there are of problems arising. Not only that, but older models can have design flaws that can also cause problems. The purpose of this article is to educate you on the most likely issues of auto repair and inform you of helpful tips that will speed up the process of fixing your car.

There are numerous things that could go wrong in your car that will require auto repair; your heater not getting warm enough, a steering pump that constantly fails, a globe that blows out, or even your car completely not working for no apparent reason. In any of these situations you should be prepared and know what to do in order to fix them. Of course if you have the knowledge to fix these problems yourself, it will save you a lot of money. On the other hand, it could cost you a pretty penny but save you some time.

When choosing a car you should be aware that depending on the make and model your repairs could be much more expensive. Usually the auto repair will cost more on luxury brand cars such as BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes. That means that if you have a common problem such as your heater not working, it will cost you much less if you have a non-luxury car than if you do, the bill can be substantially different.

As many of us know, some makes and models of cars can be more expensive to fix. So if your transmission fails in a Honda it will be considerably less than if the same thing happened and you were driving a BMW. The reason for this is luxury cars require more expensive parts and more time to install. So next time you are looking to purchase a new vehicle you may want to take note of this and decide if the more expensive auto repair is worth it to you. The upside to having a luxury car is they are less likely to have problems, so even though it?s more expensive to get them repaired, you also won?t be having as many problems ? if you are lucky, of course.

As I have talked about throughout this article there are different cars that are more susceptible to different problems that could require auto repair. In a research study they found out which cars have the most problems. In the study the top five worst cars were the 2002 Ford Explorer, the 2003 Honda Accord, the 2004 Ford Explorer, the 2000 Dodge Intrepid, and the 2001 Honda Civic. So next time you are in the market for buying a new car, take note of these and avoid them at all costs.

Video Film Movie News: THE TRUTH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF ...

Burbank, CA (May 30, 2012) ? Two Liars go looking for answers, but it?s the other two ladies who find answers they weren?t expecting, in "Kingdom of the Blind," an all-new episode of ABC Family?s hit original series, "Pretty Little Liars," airing Tuesday, June 19th (8:00 ? 9:00 PM ET/PT).? With Spencer?s mom now taking Garrett on as a client, Spencer is sure that there is a reason forcing her mother to take on the case. But when she starts questioning, she doesn?t so much learn why her mother took the case as stumble upon a larger Hastings secret. Emily also gets some surprising news about her English exam and fears what those consequences could hold.? Meanwhile, Aria agrees to be Jenna?s accompanist in order to keep tabs on her, and Hanna tries to reach out to Lucas.
