Steps of the forensic process process
1. Evidence collection
1.1. While the suspect computer is running
? Make an image of the RAM Memory, and store it on the evidence hard drive/USB. Make MD5/SHA1 hash of the image and save it and write it down in a notebook.
? Make an inventory of all processes, network connections, installed software, hardware, everything you can about the computer. Save this in a file on the evidence hard drive/USB. Make MD5/SHA1 hash of the file and save it and write it down in a notebook
1.2. When the suspect computer is off
? Make an image of the hard disk drive and store it on the evidence hard drive/USB. Make MD5/SHA1 hash of the image and save it and write it down in a notebook
? Photograph the suspect computer from all sides. Save the pictures on on the evidence hard drive/USB. Make MD5/SHA1 hashes of the photographs and save them and write them down in a notebook.
? If any immediate physical tampering is apparent, photograph it specifically, and possibly expand the investigation with a forensic expert who will look for evidence regarding the tampering method (fingerprints, tool markings)

? If there are specific keywords related to your investigation (?payroll?, ?salary?, ?password?, someones user name or e-mail address), search for those strings in the raw images. Save the results for future reference.
? Mount the disk drive image as a read-only drive. Scan the drive for viruses, rootkits and spyware. Save the results as screenshot or log file
? Analyze the event log of the suspect computer for any anomalies. Log anomalies with times of occurrence
? Analyze the running processes log of the suspect computer for any suspicious processes. If found, refer back to the memory dump to investigate the process (memory content, using a hex editor and string search)
? Find pics/movies/docs/web-mail and log positions for review. Alternatively, review them immediately for specific issues
? If applicable, use steganography detection software to detect hidden data in images and music.
? Analyze browser cookies for connection to specific sites or Internet activity
? Analyse e-mail records for connection to specific sites or Internet activity
? Investigate files in slack space (deleted from the File Allocation Tables but not physically from the disk)
3. All incriminating evidence (context dependent) are to be logged with original timestamps and with appropriate presentation (screenshots, text dumps, audio recording)

I. Running state evidence collection
1. Insert the Helix CD in the suspects computer CD/DVD drive. The Helix has an autorun so should start immediately, but be careful. If you are logged on as anything other then an administrator, you won?t be able to make a dump of the full physical memory. So close the autorun, and choose the Run as option to start the Helix software, and provide the Administrator credentials.

2. WARNING ? DO NOT log off the session in order to log on as an Administrator! Ending a session will inevitably change and contaminate the content of RAM, since a lot of processes are closed upon logoff.

3. When Helix starts, there will be a warning screen stating that Helix won?t be able to protect the suspect OS environment from changing, since it?s running within the suspect OS environment. But, since there is no other way to take a snapshot of the ram memory, just choose accept.

4. You will see the startup screen of the Helix tool. The first icon is just a preview of system info, so it?s not too useful. Go ahead to the second option ? acquisition. It will prompt you for the source. Choose physical memory, and direct the output to the evidence USB drive.
5. Acquisition will prompt you for the source to be dumped ? choose Physical Memory
It will ask for second confirmation and will start the dump

6. After Memory Dump is finished, choose incident response (3rd icon on the Left menu) and click on the small arrow to go to the second screen (shown below). Run WinAudit

7. Click on the only link and let it perform inventory of the system. Save the result as a PDF on your evidence USB

After Winaudit finishes, close it, and close the Helix mainwindow. It will ask whether you like to record all activities in a PDF file. Confirm that you wish to and save the PDF on your evidence USB.
The above process will create an MD5 hash of the memory dump on the evidence USB. Open this file and take note of the MD5 hash.

II. Disk drive evidence collection
1. Turn off the computer ungracefully, pull the plug ? this will prevent any possible shutdown scripts from running and possibly erasing data on the computer.
2. Boot it up again, and from the BIOS select to boot from CD-ROM. I n a real corporate investigation, you may need assistance of IT to provide passwords, since most corporate PC?s are set-up with BIOS password and disabled from booting from CD to prevent possible information theft.

3. Boot the Helix Linux OS

4. When booted, select Adepto from the Forensics Menu

5. Similarly to the memory dump above, select the drive you wish to make a dump of, and select your evidence USB as destination. For hash, you can choose severa. The example is with SHA1. After the dump is finished, choose the last tab (report) and choose to save the dump report as PDF to the evidence USB.

6. Copy all files to your analysis computer, and verify the hashes of the memory and disk dumps again using md5sum and sha1sum, whichever you used initially.

7. Using VDK, mount a copy of the disk image for investigation. The mount command is: vdk open path_to_dump_file\dump_filename.dd /L:free_drive_letter

For Christmas, I received a very generous gift card from my boss. Knowing that I'm a complete foodie and love nothing more than trying new restaurants, she surprised me with enough in gift cards to treat myself, my boyfriend, and my mom (almost- we went a little over) at dinner! She selected Ocean Prime?since it's one of her favorites and guess what?- it became one of mine as well!

From the moment we walked on the red carpet, literally, before entering the restaurant, I knew this would be a great experience.? Behind the hostess stand, Ocean Prime proudly displays their impressive wine selection.

The lobby's walls are also full of articles, proclaiming the greatness that is the Ocean Prime experience, which only served to make me more excited. On our way to our table, we all remarked at the terrific decor and ambiance. It was sophisticated, modern and relaxing. Ocean Prime has a bar/lounge area with live piano playing, drink specials (during happy hour), and a roaring fire to set the perfect mood. In the main dining area, intimate booths line the inner wall and the outer wall is composed mostly of windows where one can see to the outside dining and small lake bordering the restaurant.

Now, prior to coming to Ocean Prime, I browsed the menu and asked around for meal and drink suggestions. When I heard that Ocean Prime has a cocktail with dry ice, I knew I had to have it. With the perfect name of Berries & Bubbles, this drink did not disappoint. Shaken and poured right at the table, this cocktail immediately started to bubble and "smoke". I'm nothing if not a fan of a little show. Berries & Bubbles is made with Belvedere Citrus Vodka, marinated berries (poured right on top), Ocean Prime's house made Sour and Domaine Chandon Brut Champagne. My mom, preferring very sweet drinks, selected the Strawberry Smash cocktail, made with Bacardi Dragon Berry Rum, muddles fresh strawberries and hand squeezed lime. Although I preferred my choice, the Strawberry Smash can best be described as an adult strawberry Starburst in liquid form. Divine.

Next, it was time for our main entrees. Ocean Prime's menu can be overwhelming. It's not because it's a large menu with seemingly unlimited options (think: Cheesecake Factory), but because everything sounds delicious. I seriously wanted a sampler platter. To start, I opted for French Onion Soup. French Onion Soup is one of those things that I have to order whenever, wherever it appears on a menu and Ocean Prime's, as I suspected, was near perfection. Made with a great brandy and aged swiss, I hereby declare Ocean Prime's French Onion Soup in my top 2, right up there with the soup at?Malio's Prime Steakhouse, one I rant and rave about often. Good job, Ocean Prime!

Eager to taste more of what Ocean Prime had to offer, we snacked on complimentary sourdough bread while waiting for our main courses. Note: when a restaurant offers bread to tide you over, they immediately rank pretty high in my books.?

For our main course, I selected the Short Rib "Osso Buco" with horseradish whipped potatoes and caramelized carrots. Yes, I said caramelized carrots. They were out of this world and honestly, I don't even usually like carrots. My boyfriend opted for the Gerber Farms Chicken with asparagus and Lemon pan jus. Both of our dishes were featured in the Chef's Compositions section of the menu. All items in this section come with the sides listed. My mom went off of the a la carte menu and chose an 8oz Petite Filet Mignon with a twice-baked baked potato and those caramelized carrots. All of their steaks are prepared with homemade seasoning and while I didn't sample a bite, my mom commented enough for me to know that it was great.?

Short Rib Osso Buco

The meat from the short rib easily fell off the bone and was incredibly tender. The sauce was so complementary to everything in the dish so I'm glad all of the food was in one bowl. The horseradish whipped potatoes were so different from any other whipped potatoes I've had before and I couldn't get enough of them.

Chicken, asparagus, lemon pan jus

Admittedly, I was so obviously satisfied after tasting this chicken that my boyfriend asked me several times if I wanted to switch meals. I stayed with my own, though. The combination of crispy outside, tender inside and the lemon sauce was simply amazing. Everything came together so nicely. Frankly, this is the best chicken I've ever tasted.

Even though I didn't get a picture of my mom's steak, I just had to capture one of the twice-baked baked potato. All of the articles we were reading in the lobby mentioned this potato so we knew it would be delicious.

This potato is made with scallions, applewood smoked bacon and Vermont cheddar cheese and the tastes are much more elegant than the picture would let on. Also, for being a side on an a la carte menu, it was much larger than I thought it'd be. It was easily large enough to split between two people, even three.?

Of course, a true experience includes dessert so even though we were pretty stuffed, we requested a menu to look over. My mom, the eternal chocolate lover, selected the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. I selected the Creme Brulee, one of my favorite dessert choices.?

The Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie, made with peanut butter mousse and bittersweet chocolate ganache, was similar to a Reese's Cup but with a crust at the bottom, a nice and pleasant touch. The Creme Brulee was vanilla custard with a caramelized sugar top and fresh berries and was unbelievable. I don't think you could get me to stray from this dessert in my future trips to Ocean Prime.

I have definitely added Ocean Prime to my list of favorite restaurants and since there is so much on the menu that I want to try, it's a perfect excuse to plan another trip there. Our waitress was attentive and fun and pretty much the sweetest girl ever. We were blown away by the atmosphere from start to finish and will definitely sit in the lounge area next time.?

Ocean Prime also serves lunch Monday-Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and this menu has my mouth watering as well. Enjoy the Blu Lounge during happy hour (4pm-6pm) for small plates and specials on select handcrafted cocktails and wines by the glass.?

U.S. Forest Service research and funding have led to the development of a free software application that will help people identify and control destructive invasive plants in Southern forests and grasslands.

Development of the application is part of the Forest Service's multi-faceted strategy to reduce the impact of nonnative species animals, pathogens and plants. These foreign invaders deplete water supplies, poison wildlife and livestock, and damage property in urban and rural areas at a cost of about $138 billion annually. Congongrass, nonnative privets, autumn olive and tallowtree are among the most common plants plaguing the South.

"Invasive plants are one of the greatest threats to our forests and grasslands," said Leslie Weldon, deputy chief for National Forest System. "They damage our environment and economy by destroying native trees and plants and limiting access to recreation areas. This new application provides an opportunity for more land owners, land managers and concerned citizens to join the fight in protecting our lands."

The Invasive Plants in Southern Forests: Identification and Management application is currently only compatible with Apple products iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and available through iTunes. The software provides photos and information that allow users to identify the 56 nonnative plants and plant groups currently invading the forests of the 13 Southern states. Versions for other operating systems are being explored.

A grant from the Southern Research Station funded the application, which was developed by the University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health. The software is based on Southern Research Station field and management invasive plant guides.

Like the guides, the app divides invasive plants into trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, ferns and forbs and provides identification keys, photos and management recommendations. App users also get simple, on-the-spot options for treating invasive plants.

Since their release, more than 200,000 copies of the Southern Research Station guides have been distributed. The plant app is expected to inform many more people about the impact of invasive plants and get them involved in eradication efforts.

"Ultimately we hope this app will give people a new tool to go out and identify invasive plants and map their occurrence," said Southern Research Station Research Ecologist James Miller, who co-authored the application's source guides. "Effective control relies on understanding of species including their biology, their preferred habitats, and how they spread across the landscape. Those are important first steps in stopping and containing the invasions of harmful nonnative plants."

Future versions of the application will include the ability to directly report new sightings of select species into the Georgia Center's Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System, which provides a quick way to submit photos and report new sightings of invasive plants on the spot throughout the United States.

The software provides photos and information that allow users to identify the 56 nonnative plants and plant groups currently invading the forests of the 13 Southern states. Versions for other operating systems are being explored.

A grant from the Southern Research Station funded the application, which was developed by the University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health. The software is based on Southern Research Station field and management invasive plant guides.

Like the guides, the app divides invasive plants into trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, ferns and forbs and provides identification keys, photos and management recommendations. App users also get simple, on-the-spot options for treating invasive plants.

Since their release, more than 200,000 copies of the Southern Research Station guides have been distributed. The plant app is expected to inform many more people about the impact of invasive plants and get them involved in eradication efforts.

"Ultimately we hope this app will give people a new tool to go out and identify invasive plants and map their occurrence," said Southern Research Station Research Ecologist James Miller, who co-authored the application's source guides. "Effective control relies on understanding of species including their biology, their preferred habitats, and how they spread across the landscape. Those are important first steps in stopping and containing the invasions of harmful nonnative plants."

Future versions of the application will include the ability to directly report new sightings of select species into the Georgia Center's Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System, which provides a quick way to submit photos and report new sightings of invasive plants on the spot throughout the United States.

X-rays illuminate the interior of the Moon

Contrary to Earth, our Moon has no active volcanoes, and the traces of its past volcanic activity date from billions of years ago. This is surprising, because recent Moonquake data suggest that there is plenty of liquid magma deep within the Moon because part of the rocks residing there are thought to be molten. Scientists have now identified a likely reason for this peaceful surface life: the hot, molten rock in the Moon's deep interior could be so dense that it is simply too heavy to rise to the surface like a bubble in water. For their experiments, the scientists produced microscopic copies of moon rock collected by the Apollo missions and melted them at the extremely high pressures and temperatures found inside the Moon. They then measured their densities with powerful X-rays. The results are published in the Journal Nature Geosciences on 19 February 2012.

The team was led by Mirjam van Kan Parker and Wim van Westrenen from VU University Amsterdam and comprised scientists from the Universities of Paris 6/CNRS, Lyon 1/CNRS, Edinburgh, and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble.

Five decades after the Apollo missions, the formation and geological history of the Moon still hold many secrets. The astronauts not only returned 380 kg of Moon rocks to Earth but also placed many scientific instruments on the lunar surface. Last year, NASA scientists published a new model for the make-up of the interior of the Moon, using Moonquake data from these Apollo-era seismometers. Renee Weber and her colleagues claim that the deepest parts of the lunar mantle, bordering on the small metallic core, are partially molten, by up to 30 per cent. In the Earth, such bodies of magma tend to move towards the surface leading to volcanic eruptions. If the deep interior of the Moon contains so much magma, why don't we see spectacular volcanic eruptions at its surface?

The driving force for vertical movement of magma is the density difference between the magma and the surrounding solid material, making the liquid magma move slowly upwards like a bubble. The lighter the liquid magma is, the more violent the upward movement will be.

To determine the density of lunar magma, Wim van Westrenen and his colleagues synthesised moon rock in their laboratory in Amsterdam, using the composition derived from Apollo samples as their "recipe". The pressures and temperatures close to the core of the Moon are more than 45,000 bar and about 1500 degrees. It is possible to generate these extreme conditions with small samples, heating them with a high electric current while squashing them in a press. By measuring the attenuation of a powerful synchrotron X-ray beam at the ESRF traversing the sample both solid and molten, the density at high pressure and high temperature could be measured. "We had to use the most brilliant X-ray beam in the world for this experiment because the magma sample is so tiny and confined in a massive, highly absorbing container. Without a bright beam of X-rays, you cannot measure these density variations", says Mohamed Mezouar from the ESRF.

The measurements at the ESRF were combined with computer simulations to calculate the magma density at any location in the Moon.

Nearly all the lunar magmas were found to be less dense than their solid surroundings, similar to the situation on Earth. There is one important exception: small droplets of titanium-rich glass first found in Apollo 14 mission samples produce liquid magma as dense as the rocks found in the deepest parts of the lunar mantle today. This magma would not move towards the surface.

Such titanium-rich magma can only be formed by melting titanium rich solid rocks. Previous experiments have shown that such rocks were formed soon after the formation of the Moon at shallow levels, close to the surface. How did they get deep into the mantle? The scientists conclude that large vertical movements must have occurred early in the history of the Moon, during which titanium-rich rocks descended from near the surface all the way to the core-mantle boundary. "After descending, magma formed from these near-surface rocks, very rich in titanium, and accumulated at the bottom of the mantle ? a bit like an upside-down volcano. Today, the Moon is still cooling down, as are the melts in its interior. In the distant future, the cooler and therefore solidifying melt will change in composition, likely making it less dense than its surroundings. This lighter magma could make its way again up to the surface forming an active volcano on the Moon ? what a sight that would be! ? but for the time being, this is just a hypothesis to stimulate more experiments", concludes Wim van Westrenen.

Renato Dulbecco dies at 97; 1975 Nobel Prize winner in medicine

Dr. Renato Dulbecco, an Italian American virologist who shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for demonstrating how certain types of viruses invade mammalian cells to cause cancer, died of natural causes Sunday at his home in La Jolla. He was 97.

He was a faculty member at Caltech from 1949 to 1963 before moving to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla. He later served as president of the institute.

Dulbecco was also one of the first proponents of the human genome project, which many researchers initially thought would be both excessively expensive and relatively useless but which has since proved invaluable in biological research.

"Renato was one of the most brilliant scientific minds of our generation," current Salk Institute President William R. Brody said in a statement. "His contributions have truly made this a better world for all of us."

It has been known since the early 1900s that certain viruses can cause tumors in animals. The best-known example was the Rous sarcoma virus, which causes cancer in chickens. But it was not clear how the viruses produced this effect and what proportion of human cancers might be attributed to them.

In experiments carried out at Caltech in the 1950s, Dulbecco showed that a viral infection can have two outcomes: the virus can multiply inside the cell, killing the cell and releasing thousands of new viruses into the host animal; or it could alter the cell so that the cell would continue to divide and grow indefinitely, a process called transformation.

In the latter case, no new virus particles appear and the infecting virus seemingly disappears.

Through an elegant series of experiments, Dulbecco showed that the DNA from the polyoma virus became integrated into the DNA of the host cell, where it was replicated intact every time the cell replicated. Moreover, the viral DNA served as the blueprint for a small number of proteins that subverted cellular machinery, causing the cells to reproduce repeatedly ? the hallmark of tumor formation.

Additionally, this feat was achieved before it was possible to sequence the DNA of either viruses or animal cells.

For his achievement, Dulbecco shared the 1975 Nobel Prize with Howard Temin and David Baltimore, who demonstrated the existence of an enzyme ? reverse transcriptase ? that allowed RNA viruses to integrate their genes into a host cell in the same fashion as the DNA viruses studied by Dulbecco. Both were former students of his.

In his Nobel address, Dulbecco called for increased restrictions on tobacco use because of its carcinogenic potential and urged governments to make greater efforts to limit the introduction of dangerous chemicals.

"While we spend our life asking questions about the nature of cancer and ways to prevent or cure it," he said, "society merrily produces oncogenic substances and permeates the environment with them."

Renato Dulbecco was born Feb. 22, 1914, in Catanzaro, Italy, the son of a civil engineer. He enrolled at the University of Turin, where he had meant to study physics and chemistry but soon became interested in biology instead.

He received his medical degree in 1936 and during World War II served in France and Russia, where he was injured in 1942 during a major Russian offensive along the Don River.

After several months of hospitalization, he returned home, hiding out in a small village near Turin when German forces occupied Italy after Mussolini's fall. He served as a medical officer for partisan forces resisting the occupation.

In medical school, Dulbecco had worked in the laboratory of noted anatomist Giuseppi Levi, along with fellow students Salvador Luria and Rita Levi-Montalcini, both of whom also became Nobel laureates. In 1946, Luria invited Dulbecco to join his small laboratory at the Indiana University and Dulbecco immigrated the following year, becoming a U.S. citizen in 1953. At IU, he shared bench space with James Watson, another eventual Nobel laureate.

Dulbecco was working with bacteriophage, small viruses that invade only bacteria cells. He showed that bacteriophage that had been disabled by exposure to ultraviolet light could be reactivated by exposing them to bursts of white light.

That work attracted the attention of microbiologist Max Delbruck, who invited Dulbecco to join him at Caltech. In the summer of 1949, Dulbecco and his then-wife, the former Giuseppina Salvo, drove an old car cross-country. He wrote in his Nobel autobiography that he was struck by "the beauty and immensity of the U.S.A. and the kindness of its people" and vowed to continue to live here forever.

While at Caltech, Dulbecco adapted a technique he had used with bacteriophage to count the number of virus particles that are present in a tissue sample. Dubbed the plaque assay technique, the assay relies on the fact that viruses added to a culture of cells kill small areas of cells, producing clear circles that can be counted.

This technique enabled researchers for the first time to measure the concentrations of virus in a sample and was crucial to Albert Sabin's work in inventing an attenuated virus polio vaccine. Dulbecco, in fact, originally isolated the mutant polio virus used by Sabin in his vaccine.

In 1962, Dulbecco became a founding member of the Salk Institute, where he remained for the rest of his career. He also spent time at the Imperial Cancer Fund Research Laboratories in London, where he worked on human cancer viruses, although he remained on the staff at Salk. In his later years, he researched breast cancer and concluded that breast cancer stem cells gone awry might be responsible for certain types of breast tumors.

In 1988, he became interim president at Salk, a position that soon became permanent. He held the post until he returned to his laboratory research in 1992.

During the 1980s, Dulbecco had argued passionately in favor of a human genome project. After his retirement as Salk president he was asked by the Italian National Research Council to develop an Italian human genome project, and he spent about half his time each year in that country. The project was abandoned after five years, however, because of lack of funding and facilities.

Dulbecco was a classically trained pianist who was passionate about music and performed opera. He was also a dedicated do-it-yourself handyman and once told The Times, "If I can get a week off to work on the house, that's the best vacation I can get." This week, the celebrity blogosphere, websites and media pundits have buzzed with commentary about whether Brown is truly remorseful for assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

William Moran, who provides crisis management services for athletes and celebrities through New York firm McCarter & English, said there are "three golden rules" embattled celebrities must remember.

"One, time heals all wounds," Moran told Reuters. "Two, winning solves most problems. Three, people are forgiving."

Where the last rule is concerned, Moran said that showing remorse is a key factor and that is where Brown fell short.

"People are angry because he's being obstinate and not showing remorse," Moran said. "If he were my client, I would say that he should be expressing remorse for what he did, rather than defending himself."

Brown, who won a Grammy award on Sunday for best R&B album with "F.A.M.E.," has been trying with some success over the past three years to redeem himself in the public eye following his guilty plea for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 on the eve of that year's Grammy show.

After publicly apologizing, turning in positive probation reports, taking domestic violence classes, getting back to work and releasing his latest album that included hits such "Look At Me Now" and "Yeah 3x," Brown seemed to be back in good graces.

Then, after appearing on Grammy's stage and winning one of the world's top music awards, he tweeted to those who have deried him: "HATE ALL U WANT BECUZ I GOT A GRAMMY Now!..."

The tweet was later deleted, but the damage was done.

Brown is nowhere near the first celebrity to fall from grace with fans. Last year at this time, Charlie Sheen was showing hubris moreso than regret for his firing from TV sitcom "Two and a Half Men" after public rants about the show's producers.

Howard Bragman, vice chairman of Los Angeles management firm Reputation.com, told Reuters that celebrities like Brown need to make more than superficial changes in their lives to get back in the public's good graces.

For Brown, his post-Grammy tweet only dredged up memories of past stumbles on the path to redemption. He raised eyebrows in a March 2011 interview with Page Six Magazine in which he was quoted as saying, "At the end of the day, if I walk around apologizing to everybody, I'm gonna look like a damn fool."

That same month, Brown appeared on TV chat show "Good Morning America" where he was asked about Rihanna. Brown stormed off the set, started screaming, caused staff to call for security and left a shattered window behind.

"He needs life lessons, not PR lessons," Bragman said. "He needs to change his thinking. Once you change your thinking, your behavior will change."

To many Israelis, Iran is bent on destroying Israel with a nuclear device no matter the consequences to its regime or its people. Under this Islamist-madmen scenario, Israel cannot afford to let Iran shield its nuclear enrichment in impenetrable tunnels, as soon may be the case.

The counterview is that Iran?s leaders are really more interested in their survival than in making a nuclear bomb. Iran?s ruling Muslim clerics respond to diplomatic carrots and sticks in a cost-benefit way of thinking. Economic sanctions will eventually work.

With both views in mind, it is instructive to look at Iran?s actions in recent days in hopes of discerning its degree of rationality.

As sanctions have really begun to bite, Iran?s foreign minister has asked to reopen talks with the five permanent members of the Security Council and the Germans about its nuclear program. And reports indicate that Iran has canceled or postponed naval exercises scheduled to take place by Feb. 19. Such a move may be in response to President Obama?s postponement of joint US-Israel military exercises last month.

And yet evidence is emerging that Iran was behind the failed terrorist bombings aimed at Israeli diplomats in Thailand, and possibly in India and the Republic of Georgia. These attacks could just be in response to what are considered overt Israeli killings of top Iranian nuclear scientists. But if so, they also show a bizarre and amateurish method of retaliation, hinting at a leadership not quite clear of its strategy.

Iran also just acted rather childishly by cutting off oil exports to Europe before Europe was to begin a ban on Iranian oil scheduled to go into effect July 1.

The leaders in Tehran, divided as they may be, could be flailing for a way out of their increasing isolation. They may soon lose their one Arab ally, Syria?s Bashar al-Assad, and access to Hezbollah in Lebanon. And Mr. Obama has just approved sanctions on any financial institution that buys Iranian oil ? the most serious sanction so far and one that would further cripple the Iranian economy.

The Obama administration, unlike many top Israeli officials, remains in the camp of those who treat Iranian leaders as cold-minded and pragmatic.

?We judge Iran?s nuclear decisionmaking is guided by a cost-benefit approach, which offers the international community opportunities to influence Tehran,? said James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, at a recent Senate hearing. ?Iranian leaders undoubtedly consider Iran?s security, prestige, and influence, as well as the international political and security environment, when making decisions about its nuclear program.?

And CIA Director David Petraeus added that Iran?s overriding goal is ?regime survival.?

The fact that thousands of Iranians took to the streets in quiet protest on Tuesday ? the first in a year, despite a severe police presence and disruption of Internet communication ? indicates just how unpopular the leadership is at home.

The rational nature of the Iranian people, especially in their demands for democracy, may have a strong influence on an Islamic regime that could be deluded in thinking that its brand of Islam calls it to invite national martyrdom by destroying Israel.

Tougher sanctions are based on a calculated risk that Iran?s leaders are rational calculators: ?What we have to see now is how [the sanctions] play out, what is the level of popular discontent inside Iran ? does that influence the strategic decisionmaking of the supreme leader and the regime?? Mr. Patraeus said.

Obama had hopes in 2009 of opening a dialogue with Mr. Khamenei. He was rebuffed. Depending on Iran?s degree of rational thinking, those hopes might still have a chance.

Cheap Android phones to dominate developing world

A new report reveals that Android's global takeover may reach a fever pitch by 2015, when it may account for 80 percent of developing markets, in countries such as Africa, India and China.

The lower-costing Android smartphones will be the ones with the most potential for landing in consumers' hands in these markets, according to In-Stat, part of the NDP research group.?

In a summary of the report, In-Stat states elaborates on those phones:

The low-cost Android smartphone segment is comprised primarily of smartphones released with Android 2.2 or 2.3, since these versions are a good blend of features with modest memory and processor usage. The low-end low-cost smartphones generally stick with EDGE and processors running at 600MHz or lower, because a single-core EDGE chip sells for well under $10. For our purposes, low-cost means smartphones that are $150 or less. Smaller phone manufacturers will sometimes purchase from the ?gray market? where component manufacturers typically don't pay licensing fees, royalties, or taxes for the products they produce. Early competitors in the market include Huawei, MicroMax, Motorola, Samsung, Spice and ZTE.

In-Stat predicts that 340 million units of these phones will ship worldwide in 2015, and that their presence may very well disrupt Google's plan for unified upgrades and continue the fragmentation that has plagued the operating system. There is also continuing problems with app infections of the open source system, though Google is trying to counter those intruders with increased security measures.

But first, Android has to continue to duke it out with iPhones, which surged in sales amongst smartphone buyers late in 2011 with the introduction of the Siri-sensationalized iPhone 4S. Apple continues to close that gap and be a formidable adversary to compete with Google domination. Maybe resistance isn't so futile after all.
