A mathematical formula to decipher the geometry of surfaces like that of cauliflower

Dec. 18, 2012 ? Scientists at the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) have taken part in a research project that describes, for the first time, that laws that govern the development of certain complex natural patterns, such as those found on the surface of cauliflower.

The scientists have found a formula that describes how the patterns found in a multitude of natural structures are formed. "We have found a model that describes, in detail, the evolution in time and in space of cauliflower-type fractal morphologies for nanoscopic systems," explains Professor Rodolfo Cuerno, of UC3M's Mathematics Department, author of the research, together with scientists from Universidad Pontificia Comillas (UPCO), the Instituto de Ciencia de los Materiales de Madrid (the Materials Science Institute of Madrid) of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient?ficas (CSIC) (Spanish National Research Council), la Escuela Polit?cnica de Par?s (Polytechnic School of Paris, France) and the Universidad Cat?lica de Lovaina (Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium).

This work, which was recently published in the New Journal of Physics, falls within the field of fractal geometry, which is based on the mathematical description of many natural forms, such as sea coasts, the borders between countries, clouds, snowflakes and even the networks of blood vessels. A fractal is characterized because its parts are similar to the whole. "In the case of cauliflowers, this property (self-similarity) becomes evident if you look closely at a photo of them," says another of the researchers, Mario Castro, a professor at UPCO. "In fact," he adds, "without more information, it is impossible to know the size of the object." This way, using relatively simple algorithms, complex structures almost indistinguishable from certain landscapes, leaves or trees, for example, can now be generated. "However, the general mechanisms that govern the appearance or evolution over time of those natural structures have rarely been identified beyond a merely visual or geometric reproduction," clarifies the researcher.

From the supermarket to the laboratory

The cauliflower-type morphologies were known is this realm in an empirical way, but no one had provided a model like the one that these scientists have developed. "In our case," they comment, "the connection came about naturally when a certain ingredient (noise) was added to a related model that we had worked on previously. When we did that, in the numeric simulations, surfaces appeared, and we quickly identified them as the ones that our experiment colleagues had been able to obtain, under the right conditions, in their laboratories." Based on the characteristics of this theoretical model, they have inferred general mechanisms that can be common and can help in making models of other very different systems, such as a combustion front or a cauliflower like the ones that can be found in any supermarket.

Fractals of this type are interesting because they are ubiquitous, that is, they appear in systems that vary widely in their nature and dimensions. In general, fractals can be found in any branch of the natural sciences: mathematics (specific types of functions), geology (river basins or the outline of a coast), biology (forms of aggregate cells, of plants, of the network of blood vessels...), physics (the growth of amorphous solid crystals or the distribution of galaxies), chemistry (the distribution in space of the reagents of chemical reactions). Moreover, they have also been studied due to their relationship with structures created by man, such as communication and transportation networks, city layouts, etc.

This finding may help to discover concrete applications for improving the technologies used in thin film coatings, and to understand the conditions under which they are smooth or have wrinkles or roughness. "This is also useful in generating textures in computer simulations," the researchers point out. "And, conceptually," they add, "this can give us clues about the general mechanisms involved in forming structures in areas that are very different from the ones in which the model was formulated, such as those in which there is competition for growth resources among the various parts of the system."

Today I have continued to work on my annotated bibliography:

GreatSchools Staff. ?Why Learn a Second Language?? GreatSchools. GreatSchools Inc. Web. 7 December 2012. < http://www.greatschools.org/students/academic-skills/540-learn-second-language.gs?page=all >.

Main Idea:

The main idea of this source is to draw attention to the need of learning a second language in the United States. This source speaks to the common benefits of learning a second language and the changes in the education system in terms of world languages. The sub-claims in this piece is that there are several resources for learning a second language and that, ?I took French in school, but I can?t speak it? is, ?no loner an acceptable response?(Source 2). This source talks about the several benefits of learning a second language and how anyone can benefit from this type of knowledge. It presents the idea of taking advantage of the opportunities available to people to learn a second language, saying that there are even easily accessible online resources for learning a second language.

Argument Analysis:

I believe that this is a reliable source, because although it does not formally cite any outside sources or provide a bibliography on where their information came from, this source does reference a few credibly sources such as the College Board. Though this source is from an educational website, I do think that it is in some ways objective, because the article was written by the general GreatSchools Staff, not by a specific committee or group focusing on world language education. They also increase their credibility by providing quotes and some references to support their claims. I believe that the author is qualified, because it is an educational organization arguing in favor of expanding students? education for their future benefit. I think that this source is well informed, but somewhat popular. It takes a more casual tone and would be more likely to persuade parents or open-minded teachers to side with their views on the subject.

Reflection:

I think that the information provided in this source fits in well with my information, because provides a lot of information that would be persuasive to the everyday person, such as parents, teachers, or other interested parties. Although this source is general in some areas, I think that it is easy to understand and that when combined with more scholarly sources, will provide information that can be persuasive and well understood by a larger audience.

Helpful Advice For Surviving Your Personal Bankruptcy - Finance ...

TIP! Look for a local bankruptcy lawyer who has a strong reputation. After nailing one down, find out if you can have a free consultation.

Many people disapprove of bankruptcy until their personal situation changes. Sudden loss of income or major life changes can result in situations where bankruptcy may be the only out. If filing for bankruptcy is your only choice, educate yourself on the process.

TIP! Always research your situation and options before you move forward with filing a bankruptcy. Think over your personal debt situation, and determine which of your debts are potentially dischargeable through bankruptcy.

Make sure to choose the right type of bankruptcy for your particular situation. There are a number of different types of bankruptcy. Research each type before you decide to file. Balance the positive and negative attributes of each, and seek the advice of professionals before you decide.

TIP! It?s important to do research. You may think it?s possible to file for personal bankruptcy on your own if you cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

Do your research ahead of time to find out if you permitted to get a Homestead Exemption with Chapter 7. If you don?t, the possibility may exist for you with Chapter 13. Some scenarios will require a conversion from Chapter 7 to Chapter 13, dependent on what your attorney says.

TIP! You should check with the personal bankruptcy resources available online to educate yourself thoroughly before you begin the process. The United States Department of Justice and National Association for Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys provide excellent information.

Don?t be afraid to remind your attorney of certain details in your case. Chances are that you may have forgotten to tell them about certain specifics that may be important to your filing. All information submitted to the court with your signature needs to be double checked.

TIP! When you are filing for bankruptcy, make sure you list all of the financial information you may have. If you do not complete your financial profile your case could be delayed or dismissed.

It is important not to delay the process of determining whether or not you should file for bankruptcy. Filing for bankruptcy is a hard decision to make but if you wait too long, your situation will get worse. By talking to a professional, as soon as possible, they can give you some advice on things you can do before it all gets too complicated.

TIP! Stay in touch with your attorney so you know what he or she is doing regarding your bankruptcy. You ought to know what?s going on at all times, even if it means calling your lawyer.

If it looks like you?re in for a big hit on your taxes, don?t necessarily assume bankruptcy is a way out for you. It has occurred that tax debt has been paid for by a credit card and then bankruptcy filed immediately after. This is done assuming that filers can cheat the system, since the balance can be found on credit cards. But, this practice is prohibited by the bankruptcy code, and you will be responsible for the tax bill as well as the credit card debt.

TIP! If your earnings are higher than your expenses then filing for bankruptcy is a waste of time and money. While filing may seem simple and a way to get out of paying your debts, it does tremendous amounts of long-term harm to your credit report.

A great personal bankruptcy tip is to reconsider getting a divorce, if you?re finding yourself in a tough financial situation. A lot of individuals get a divorce and file for bankruptcy immediately because they did not plan for the troubles that they will be experiencing financially. Making sure that divorce is a good option is best.

TIP! When you are considering bankruptcy, it?s a good idea to give a little thought to the events that contributed to your current financial difficulties. Some people?s personal bankruptcy is caused by sudden emergency medical bills.

Do not use your retirement fund or savings to pay off creditors. Unless there are no other options, your retirement funds should never be touched. Although it is quite normal to use some of your savings, ensure that you leave enough in your account for emergencies.

TIP! Stay up to date with any new bankruptcy filing laws. These kinds of laws are constantly changing and it is important that you are aware of these changes, so that you can learn how to properly file for bankruptcy.

Once the bankruptcy is a few months old, you should re-evaluate your credit with all three of the credit bureaus to confirm accuracy. Be sure the report is accurate with your closed credit accounts and discharged loans. If any discrepancies appear, check on them immediately. This will allow you to start fixing your credit.

TIP! Before you file, make the choice to be fiscally reliable. Do not increase current debt or incur new debt prior to bankruptcy.

If you are filing for bankruptcy, it is imperative that you have a good understanding of your rights. Certain unscrupulous creditors will try to convince you that certain debts can?t be discharged in bankruptcy. There are a few debts that cannot be cleared, such as student loans and child support, but be sure to know the details when dealing with debt collectors. If you know that a debt can definitely be bankrupted, yet the collector still harasses you, file a report with the attorney general in your state.

TIP! Make sure you are acting at the appropriate time. When filing for personal bankruptcy, it is very important that you act at the correct time.

You might have to file for bankruptcy if nothing else has worked for your financial situation. You should not let it ruin your life though if you find yourself facing this decision. Important information can be ascertained simply by reading on.

Chinese probe snaps close-ups of an asteroid

SASTIND via Weibo / UMSF

China's Chang'e-2 probe took multiple images of the asteroid Toutatis during its Dec. 13 flyby.

By Alan Boyle

China's official news agency is reporting that the country's Chang'e 2 deep-space probe made an amazing flyby of the asteroid Toutatis this week, snapping a series of pictures as it passed by at a distance of just 2 miles. The achievement signals China's entry into yet another exclusive space club.

Only four of the world's space efforts have managed close encounters with asteroids: NASA (with NEAR Shoemaker and Dawn, for example), the European Space Agency (with Rosetta), Japan (with Hayabusa) ??and now China with Toutatis.

The official Xinhua news agency quoted officials at the?State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, or SASTIND, as saying that Chang'e 2 buzzed past the 3-mile-long (5-kilometer-long) asteroid at a relative speed of 24,000 mph (10.73 kilometers per second).

Chang'e 2 was launched in 2010?primarily to serve as a lunar orbiter, but after a successful mission at the moon, the $132 million spacecraft was repurposed as a deep-space explorer.?The encounter with Toutatis had been planned for months, but Chinese media kept mum about the results until Saturday.

Aficionados of planetary science hailed China's success.

"Oh my goodness, did they succeed. This is awesome," the Planetary Society's Emily Lakdawalla said in a blog post passing along the news. On the Unmanned Spaceflight discussion forum, Ted Stryk wrote, "Welcome to the interplanetary club, China."

Toutatis is a near-Earth object that's big enough to cause a mass extinction if it were to hit our planet?? but fortunately, it isn't projected to come all that near in the foreseeable future. This week it passed by Earth at a minimum distance of 4.3 million miles (7 million kilometers). That provided scientists with an opportunity to study the peanut-shaped space mountain at a relatively close but totally safe distance.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory conducted a series of radar observations using the Goldstone radio antenna in California, and on Friday, JPL released a grainy time-lapse video showing Toutatis' rotation.

This video, generated from Goldstone's Solar System Radar, shows the rotation of the asteroid when it was 4.3 million miles from Earth.

The insights gleaned from such observations could conceivably help scientists figure out how asteroids came into existence early in the solar system's history, how to mine asteroids for valuable resources, or how to divert asteroids that have the potential to threaten Earth.

Lakdawalla noted that the radar readings, combined with China's up-close images, made Toutatis one of the "best-studied asteroids in the solar system."?That sounds like a bold statement, considering that NASA studied the asteroid Eros with NEAR Shoemaker for more than a year, and had Dawn in orbit around the asteroid Vesta for a year as well. But the fact that Toutatis has gotten so much attention in the past week from multiple space efforts certainly suggests that scientists see "minor planets" as a major interest.

Still more asteroid encounters are on the agenda in coming years ??including Dawn's arrival at the dwarf planet Ceres in 2015, a potential sequel to Japan's Hayabusa mission, and the crewed mission that NASA wants to send to a near-Earth asteroid in the mid-2020s.

And let's not forget China. Chang'e 2 isn't finished just yet.?Xinhua quoted sources as saying that the probe "is continuing its deep space travel and will reach a distance of more than 10 million kilometers away from Earth in January next year."

What's a Domain Name and Why Do You Have to have One ...

Lots of people wonder ?What is a domain name??. They also wonder why it is recommended to own one. First of all, it?s very useful to know what it actually is. A domain name is commonly used to swap number addresses which are used by the net with a name which is much easier to remember. On the net, the IP (Internet Protocol) address is used to contact servers. The Ip consists of four sets of three numbers. This is very hard for many people to memorize. It is a whole lot easier to link to an IP address that has a domain name instead. To illustrate, the domain name google.com describes a team of several IP addresses that may sometimes change. However, an individual only would need to remember google.com to arrive at that website.

It is helpful to know how domain names work when determining the answer to the question ?What is a domain name??. There is an Internet protocol called DNS (Domain Name Service). Its job is to translate domain names into IP addresses. When the network equipment route data files all over the Internet, they use IP addresses to determine how to get a data packet from point A to point B. For example, an online browser will send a request to access the google.com website. The DNS service on your computer sends a request to obtain the IP address. After the IP address is received, the browser will connect with the server using that address. In the event the IP address is not recognized because the DNS services are down, it?s close to impossible for the internet browser to make contact with the web page. That?s the reason why a domain name is really important.

Someone that hopes to open a web site needs a domain name. Nobody memorizes IP addresses, plus they are subject to change after some time. Luckily, it is quite reasonably priced to buy a domain name. The issue will likely be finding the one that hasn?t previously been taken by another individual. However, including several words and dashes are good ways to finding an unused domain name. The process to obtain a domain name for your own website is not challenging for anyone who knows the basic principles of ?What is a domain name??.

There are several good companies on the market where one can acquire a domain name at a very affordable price. The domain name for my web page www.websitefordummies.info cost me just $2.99/year. NameCheap is my personal favorite, but there are several other great companies to choose from. Go Daddy, and Bluehost are great website hosts which also offer domain names. Check out a handful of companies and select one that meets your requirements.

Those that can answer the question ?What is a domain name?? will have a significantly easier time understanding how the world-wide-web functions and the way to manage a website. This is particularly useful when a website or desktop web browser is down. As an example, a knowledgeable user can identify very quickly if it is a DNS problem or not. That?s the reason it will be beneficial to know how a domain name works.

Quiet town wonders, 'How can we be protected'?

John Makely / NBC News

Residents of Newtown, Conn., embrace outside St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church prior to a vigil for victims of Friday's massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School -- the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

By Miranda Leitsinger and John W. Schoen, NBC News

NEWTOWN, Conn. ? Unexpected and unwelcome, gun violence tore through this hilly, wooded New England town on Friday, claiming more than two-dozen lives ? many of them just beginning -- and shaking what one resident called a ?small lovely village? to its core.

?How can we be protected from people like this?? Jack DeFumeri wondered out loud, saying he moved to Newtown -- founded in 1711 -- years ago from much-larger Danbury because he wanted to raise his three daughters in a safe environment.

?I don?t know anymore,? he said before entering a vigil Friday night at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, as the church's bell's tolled from above. ?You take precautions, but how can you see this coming? ?I can?t imagine what the parents are going through, especially this time of year.?

Friends and family from nearby towns flocked to Newtown to share the town?s grief and offer support. This small city of 28,000, with its tidy clapboard homes and steeple-topped churches, feels farther from New York City than the 90 minutes it takes to reach the metropolis. Residents from surrounding villages expressed similar disbelief that this most modern of crimes had intruded on their quiet corner of the world.?

?It?s a picture-book, storybook town,? said Joan Demato of nearby Brookfield, who was part of the overflow crowd that attended the St. Rose vigil, running the gantlet of news trucks bathing the church entrance with floodlights. ??I don?t know if there are any safe places left in this world.?

After the vigil, Monsignor Robert Weiss told reporters gathered outside that six or seven kids who had attended the church were among the 20 children who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

?I think the families are very broken,? he said. ?I?m sure that they?re still wondering and questioning. I think some of them are still hoping that this really didn?t happen. The rough days are just ahead of them.? ?

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed more than two dozen, 20 of them children, left the quiet community of Newtown, Conn., desperately trying to understand what happened. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

Just a short drive away, parishioners at Trinity Episcopal Church shed tears and wrapped their arms around one another during a solemn prayer service. The quiet crying grew louder when the Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd announced that two children, members of the congregation, were among those killed.

Adams-Shepherd had spent much of the day at the fire station with the families of some of the presumed victims -- though formal identification hadn't yet been made.?

"You've got to keep them in your prayers," she said, later adding,?"I don't think we'll ever be the same."

See more video on the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary on NBCNews.com

"There are no words,? the Rt. Rev. James Curry said in the prayer service. ?There is nothing that we can say but instead we cry out. We cry out in shared grief and pain for the loss of so many children, so many adults .... We do not understand, and we cannot imagine why someone would murder. We cannot comprehend."

Among those attending the service were the Elken family.

John Makely / NBC News

Heather and Karl Elken and their daughter Liia, 17, talk about life in Newtown, Conn., scene of Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, as they leave a prayer service at Trinity Episcopal Church.

"We just really felt the need to come in and say a prayer for all of the families," said Heather Elken, 47, an elementary school nurse, who attended with her husband, Karl, 48, and daughter Liia, 17.

"We moved here 10 years ago,? she said. ?We researched where to go for months and picked Newtown over anywhere else in Connecticut, and this is where we've raised our kids from seven years old through high school. We've lived here for the most important 10 years of our lives. We just don't understand."

She said she and her husband learned about the shooting when Liia texted her from her high school at 9:46 a.m.: "Lockdown. Not a drill." ?

"It was the longest day, just the longest day," Heather Elken said.

Earlier, Peter Hugens, 78, had a hard time finding words to describe how the unspeakable tragedy that? unfolded hours earlier at the nearby school would change the town that he has called home for 11 years, since moving from Brooklyn, N.Y.

?We moved up here ? like many people -- to get away from the so-called horrors of the city," he said, standing on his front lawn and looking out over the undulating Connecticut countryside.

He said his new hometown, just a couple miles from the Housatonic River, has ?gotten bigger? over the years. ?But people work very hard to keep a place like this a small lovely village,? he said. ?... They move here with a sense of optimism and hope. And they have every right to feel that way.?

Outside a Dunkin Donuts store at a local shopping center, Kenneth Knapp said he was only beginning to process the horrific crime.

?It's going to take a long time to soak in, that's for sure,? he said. ?Last night I'm looking in the sky for meteors, tonight I'm watching helicopters flying around.?

Knapp, an inspector in a machine shop, said Newtown wasn?t paradise, citing a criminal case still widely known locally as the ?wood-chipper murder.? ?In that grisly case from the late 1980s, local resident Richard B. Crafts, a 50-year-old airline pilot, was convicted of murdering his 39-year-old Danish wife, Helle, then dismembering her body and disposing of it in the dead of night with a wood-chipper.

The heartbreaking mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School was met with disbelief and tears as people across the country reacted to the tragic news. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

?You'll see a lot of things this town has probably gone through, a lot of things, but nothing to this magnitude,? he said.

His friend, Tom Adams, 66, who has lived in Newtown since he was 8, said that his 5-year-old granddaughter was in a classroom adjacent to the ones where Adam Lanza, a troubled 20-year-old, allegedly carried out the massacre, but she escaped unharmed and, so far, untroubled by the horrific crime.

?She doesn't know anything,? he said. ?There was some noise. They took her out of school. That's all.? ?

He said that he was on his way to see her. ?I just want a hug, that's all I want,? he said.

John Makely / NBC News

Theresa Swift and her son, William, outside St. Rose of Lima church in Newtown, Conn.

But older, more-aware youngsters, even some who were far from the shooting, weren?t immune to the trauma.

Theresa Swift, 47, and her 10-year-old son, William, who attends another Newtown school, were already contemplating what would happen when the alarm sounded on Monday morning.

Asked outside the St. Rose vigil if he would feel OK about going to school again next week, the clearly shaken boy replied, ?I?m afraid they?re going to come for me.?

His mom quickly reacted, reaching to touch William with a steadying hand.

?I don?t know,? she said of the school question. ?We?ll cross that bridge when we get there.?

NBC's Alex Moe contributed to this report.

Michelle Mcloughlin / Reuters

The second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history sent crying children spilling into the school parking lot as frightened parents waited for word on their loved ones.

Mourners gather at funeral for Chiefs' Belcher

DIX HILLS, N.Y. (AP) ? Jovan Belcher was remembered Wednesday for the accomplishments of a life that ended so suddenly and violently.

Several hundred mourners gathered for the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker's funeral near his hometown on Long Island. The 25-year-old Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend on Dec. 1, then drove to the Chiefs' practice facility and committed suicide in front of team officials.

At Upper Room Christian Church on Wednesday, relatives wore black - and red, the Chiefs' color. Pastor Dawn Mixon shared that Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, described him as a "humble, kind young man." He had a soft spot for children and loved cartoons.

"We may not understand the reasons why we are here or understand what caused this tragedy," Mixon said.

At a celebration of Belcher's life, there were hints of the way it ended. A photo slide show played on a large screen above the stage, with images from Belcher's childhood through his football careers at nearby West Babylon High School and the University of Maine.

Then appeared the words "In loving memory of" Belcher and Kasandra Perkins, the mother of his 3-month-old daughter. After a series of pictures of Perkins and baby Zoey came the message, "Keep this little girl in your prayers."

"The legacy we pass on to her will be good," said his uncle, Davin Miles.

Next to an open casket were collages of photos and mementos from Belcher's playing career. An array of flowers spelled out W.B. for his high school.

Chiefs players and staff attended a memorial service for Belcher in Kansas City last week. His locker at their practice facility had been left intact after his death ? his helmet, pads, laundry and shoes still sitting there the way he left them. As the Chiefs returned from an off day Wednesday, it had finally been cleaned out.

On a Saturday morning, the day before the team's game against the Carolina Panthers, Belcher shot the 22-year-old Perkins multiple times at their home. Police said Belcher and Perkins previously had been arguing.

Belcher then drove to Arrowhead Stadium, where he thanked coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli for all they'd done for him. As police arrived, Belcher slipped behind a car and put the gun to his head.

His path to becoming an NFL starter had been an unlikely one. Belcher did not play in college football's top division, and he wasn't drafted. But he made the Chiefs, becoming a full-time starter in 2010.

Bishop Stephanie Green described Belcher as "a man who did some awesome things ? while other young men his age were out hustling, slinging and doing other things, he chose an education."

Diversified Technical Systems (DTS) Combat Helmet Smart-Sensor Named One of the Greatest Inventions by U.S. Army

Smart Helmet Sensor Alerts for Possible Combat-Related Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) in Soldiers

Seal Beach, CA (PRWEB) December 12, 2012

A combat helmet smart-sensor designed by Diversified Technical Systems, Inc. (DTS) to help address combat-related traumatic brain injuries (TBI) was recently named by the U.S. Army as One of the Greatest Inventions of the past year.

DTS designed the system to fit into the crown of virtually any combat helmet. The smart-sensor continuously measures soldier head acceleration for up to 12 months and aids in determining whether a soldier should seek immediate medical attention with a possible TBI caused by any incident ranging from combat to crashes to IED explosions.

The DTS smart-sensor is actually 7 independent transducers (3 axis accelerometers, 3 axis angular rate sensors and 1 pressure sensor) plus a data recorder with a combined weight of only 4 ounces. The system operates on an internal rechargeable battery and is designed to be imperceptible to the soldier, whose body armor, weapons and other gear can weigh as much as 100 pounds.

The nearly 50,000 units being fielded will also collect extensive amounts of data that will help analyze the correlation between experienced head motion and mild TBI, which is critical to understand for the long-term care of soldiers. The helmet sensor, officially called the Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Systems (HEADS), is a BAE Systems project for the U.S. Army and was first introduced to the military in 2007 when more than 6,000 units underwent field trials in Iraq and Afghanistan for the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corp. The project proved both successful and valuable, with HEADS Generation 2 fielding 20,000 units to troops and an additional 20,000 units in production now.

"The award winners demonstrated significant impact to Army capabilities, potential benefits outside of the Army, and inventiveness. This program's unique selection process reflects the voice of the Warfighter and insight into the future of Army equipment. The AGI awards are truly Soldiers' Choice Awards," said Dale Ormond, director of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command. Ormond also commended the scientists and engineers for their efforts to empower, unburden and protect Soldiers.

Mobile Computing: What It Can Do To Your Business?

The following article includes pertinent information that may cause you to reconsider what you thought you understood. The most important thing is to study with an open mind and be willing to revise your understanding if necessary.

The wireless technology has brought in a new trend in computing, mobile computing. It is the cross between fixed wireless and mobility applications. In mobile computing, users have portable devices to enjoy its characteristics. Among these portable devices are handheld smart phones, pocket pcs, personal digital assistants or PDA, and of course, laptops. Using these handheld devices allow the people to continue accessing shared infrastructure irrespective of their location and having flexible communication.

In general sense, mobile computing is the use of any computer physically not connected by wires to the host computer or server. It is about interaction that requires now wires, but means real-time connection, plus synchronization procedure, depending on the application used. Simply put, this technology has put a new revolutionized ways on how people utilize computers and get connected with each other.

With the various innovative ideas provided in the information technology market, various solutions and innovations have also been coming out front in the mobile computing industry. Companies that have taken advantaged of the mobile computing platforms have been embracing changes and propelling themselves into the front market seat. While those who have refused to succumb were forced to be in the backseat.

Accordingly, the employers have benefited from the fast coming horizon of the technology. The innovative video and audio experiences it provided to every worker has spawned new opportunities and approaches how they can be more efficient, productive, and innovative with their work. The employers of course are gaining much more from this experience, enabling the growth of the business because of the mature and high-fashioned manner dealings with industry.

I trust that what you?ve read so far has been informative. The following section should go a long way toward clearing up any uncertainty that may remain.

With all the advantages that mobile computing is providing, it is inevitable that there are disadvantages. While you are gaining success, with increase in employees? efficiency and productivity, there could be lawsuits and issues that could arise in the process. Because of the fast rising of the mobile computing, that every business has been adapting to it, there is an increase in liabilities as well.

How does this happen? In case many of you are not aware, there are new law cases that have been showing how employers can be liable when accidents happen while mobile technologies are used, in this case when driving, crossing streets, and not just paying attention because of occupancy to any mobile gadget. The bad news is it does not only cover work periods but even non-work hours.

The lawyers see a potential of getting good chunks from the new efficiency that mobile computing technology is providing to your business. While you are receiving incredible growth in productivity and efficiency statistics because of the implementation of such advanced technology, you are also welcoming the possibilities of severe litigations in the case of accidents.

You wouldn?t want disasters to happen along with your business? success, so even though mobile computing technology is such a wonderful and incredible change in the business strategy, you might wish to be always up with all these law cases issues concerning the use of mobile handsets, portable gadgets and devices, before they can ruin your attempts of completely mobilizing your company?s entire workforce.

World powers recognize Syrian opposition coalition

MARRAKECH, Morocco (Reuters) - Major powers are set to give Syria's opposition full political recognition on Wednesday but not the weapons that rebel fighters need to counter President Bashar al-Assad's superior firepower as they gain ground across the country.

The "Friends of Syria," a loose forum of governments opposed to Assad, will meet in the Moroccan city of Marrakech as the rebels intensify their push on Damascus and signs grow that the 20-month uprising may be nearing a tipping point.

President Barack Obama announced on U.S. television on the eve of the Marrakech talks that Washington would now recognize the newly formed coalition of opposition groups as Syria's legitimate representative, which could intensify the pressure for Assad to relinquish power.

"We've made a decision that the Syrian Opposition Coalition is now inclusive enough, is reflective and representative enough of the Syrian population, that we consider them the legitimate representative of the Syrian people in opposition to the Assad regime," Obama said in an interview with ABC News.

However, his announcement stopped short of authorizing the United States to supply weapons to Syria's opposition - something Obama has steadfastly refused to do.

A diplomatic source in the Middle East gave Reuters a draft text agreed on Tuesday night by the Friends of Syria. It said the participants "acknowledged the National Coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people."

The source said discussion also centered on reference to the right to self defense, which was argued by "a Gulf country but other states were not in favor."

He said a compromise was found stating that the group "recognized the legitimate need of the Syrian People to defend itself against the violent and brutal regime of Bashar Al Assad's."

Fighting is moving closer to Assad's residence in the centre of Damascus and early on Wednesday, government forces fired artillery and rockets at southwestern suburbs of the capital adjacent to the Mezzeh military airport, activists said.

The mainly Sunni Muslim rebels have scored a string of victories against Assad's forces, many of them from his Alawite religious minority. There is little evidence that the government is regaining control, residents say.

The Syrian army is using warplanes and heavy artillery to try to halt further advances by rebels, many of them die-hard Islamists. Opposition leaders say they need heavy weapons to sustain the momentum and change the military equation in a conflict which has killed 40,000 people since March 2011.

The two sides battled near Damascus airport, about 25 km (15 miles) southeast of the palace. The rebels now hold a near continuous arc of territory from the east to the southwest of his power base.

Damascus residents are facing power cuts and food shortages as they try to prepare for winter. In central Syria an attack on a village killed or injured as many as 200 members of Assad's Alawite minority sect, activists said, but it was unclear who was behind the assault.

Assad's political and armed opponents, dogged by splits and rivalries throughout their battle to end his family's 42-year rule, have established a more unified political opposition and military command, hoping to win international support.

France, Britain, Turkey and the Gulf states have already granted the formal recognition. The European Union, in a meeting on Monday, moved a step closer towards recognition. Russia restated its opposition on Wednesday.

The opposition says what it really needs is weapons.

"We are telling the international community that we don't want their military intervention but we want them to supply us with developed anti-aircraft defense systems," Seif said. "The Syrian people can finish off the battle within weeks if we get this support."

Little in the way of direct military or financial support is expected to be channeled to the coalition at the Morocco meeting, partly because it lacks the ability to act as a provisional government and because Western powers are still wary of backing Islamist fighters in the rebel ranks.

'JOCKEYING FOR POSITION'

A diplomat attending the meeting said there had been much "jockeying for position within the coalition without addressing the main political issues," including making arrangements to work with Syria's Alawite, Kurdish and Christian minorities and creating a framework for transitional justice.

As delegates arrived in Marrakech, the United States announced it had designated the radical Islamist rebel group Jabhat al-Nusra - which has claimed responsibility for dozens of car bombs and fights alongside other rebel Syrian brigades - as a terrorist organization.

Farouk Tayfour, deputy leader of the Syrian Sunni Muslim Brotherhood, said Washington had made a "very wrong and hasty decision".

The fighting has driven hundreds of thousands of Syrians into neighboring countries and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees said more than half a million were either registered or awaiting registration in the region.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will miss the Marrakech meeting but is sending her deputy William Burns to accelerate the process of helping the opposition.

While U.S. arms for the rebels remain off the table for now, legitimizing the disparate forces may make it easier for other countries to act.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia are already arming and financing the Muslim Brotherhood and other militant groups while Iran is bankrolling Assad.

"Diplomatic recognition is not enough. We need military support. A transitional phase has started and we need the means to defend the liberated parts of Syria from regime strikes," coalition member Abdelbasset Sida told Reuters.

"We are nearing the end. Battles in Damascus are drawing very near to the inner sanctum of the regime and I do not expect Bashar to last for long," he said.

Syrian opposition campaigner Walid al-Bunni said that after many meetings, the "Friends of Syria" had to show willingness to depose Assad and end the bloody conflict.

"Every week of delay means the destruction of villages and parts of cities and towns and the killing of an average of 1,000 people," said Bunni, one of a few members of the coalition not allied with the Brotherhood.

"Recognition of the coalition will help but it will not end the crisis. There needs to be real international will to stand by the Syrian people and get rid them of this dictatorship."

It only does everything! Even Bingo? - Games Fiends

Online gaming is not a new concept ? hell I remember dialling up people to play ID games directly over my 28.8 modem! No, online gaming has been around for ages? what?s new though is the amount of people discovering online play and what that could mean for the future when new hardware arrives.

Now certainly many have come to online gaming through disconnected means. For instance playing Call of Duty over Xbox Live. Tending their crops via Facebook, or feeling the social rush playing Bingo with their friends.

It?s via these means that gaming online has become such a huge part of most people?s lives. Does your aunt even realise the mechanics buried within a game like Song Pop? No. Nor should she care. The conjoining elements here are the social aspects. Xbox Live, as fun as it can be, wouldn?t be the place it is today if Microsoft hadn?t incorporated easy to use voice chat ? and included that free headset for most SKUs.

Likewise a lot of companies like Zynga or PopCap would have languished in the realms of shareware on the PC or poorly constructed gaming dump sites, if it hadn?t been for the likes of Facebook. Tight integration with social mechanics has brought online gaming to the masses. More people are connected globally by online gaming now than ever before and it can only continue to grow.

As more and more titles embrace the social aspects the longer they will run. Look at the shelf life of a title like Call of Duty 4. A huge milestone title that changed a lot of what first person shooters had been doing since Quake. But, since 2007, how much revenue and business has COD 4 done? Take the example of World of Warcraft. A massively successful game too, one that has sold many millions of boxed and online copies. It continues to do many millions of dollars worth of business though, even 8 years after release. It does this by engaging people on a global scale. Pushing the social aspects of guilds and group quests and making people band together.

Online Gaming next generation

As we approach a new year & face the upcoming announcements of new games consoles, one thing seems incredibly clear to me. Social and co-operative play has had its early years. It?s had its teenage years. It?s time it grew up and become all it can be.

Titles like Dust 514 are embracing a concept that many have hinted at and one I?ve tried to write design after design against for years. In the same way that when Peter Molyneux finally had the idea of letting you see and move around your theme park in 3D, rather than viewed from the over head view. The next genre of multiplayer and co-op titles will take a step towards a more global theatre of play.

Allowing people to interact with a game world from multiple angles is a logical step and Eve/Dust 242 are making this early move. To expand that further why not have a game world that speak to many player types at once? One limit yourself by saying Space Gunner Blaster Boy 14 is a platform shooter, with a hint of RPG? Why not just make Space Gunner Online. Then have platform fans interact with the game as a 3D/2D platform title. You undertake missions to collect rare materials from around the Space Gunner worlds. Simulation fans then purchase the materials with in-game currency to construct the factories, buildings, roads and general infrastructure of the Space Gunner universe.

Space exploration gamers can then take a ship, made from the factories, and use it to explore new worlds ? make contact with other civilisations (also more gamers in the universe) who are also evolving at their own pace. Trade routes are established, pirates must be patrolled against so your flight sim and space combat fans get to interact with the same world by being the airforce for their respective home worlds or corporations.

Inevitably wars will break out so you then have your RTS fans laying in the strategy for war. This then feeds in to scenarios that First Person Shooter fans can drop in to and interact with a world in a meaningful and permanent way.

The options and scope are endless and massively daunting. The amount of work to bring this to fruition seems insurmountable. That?s not the case though. You?d need a visionary publisher/developer. Someone with money and ideas to burn. We?re talking Valve or Activision here in all reality. They have all these game types already in existence. All they need to do is pool the ideas in to one whole. To weave the online thread throughout the entire product catalogue. Imagine your joy at playing a quick game of Space Gunner Tower Defenders on your iPhone 8 whilst on the bus. Then getting home that night to see that your quick game on the trip to and from work/school has helped defend your home planet and net you a load of cash and resources. Which you then use to build your new hydroponic farm to grow wheat. Which you then sell to get the money to travel on a quest to anywhere in the game universe you want.

The front end technology is in place. The data infrastructure is almost there. What we need now is someone to weave that thread. To see the bigger picture and start to pool this all together to make a conjoined universe.

Who knows? maybe this is what Valve or Blizzard have been up to these past years other than churning out sequels and game updates. These tentative steps made by Eve and Dust 514 will be watched very closely with-in the industry. As was the attempts to make a unified game world/platform by the Trackmania and Shootmania team.

All I can say, with some certainty, is these advance will and must happen. To my mind though we?re looking to people like Peter Molyneux, David Braben, Will Wright or Sid Meier to take us to the next level ? to lead innovations once again. It?s not going to work straight away but, to paraphrase Philip Vera Cruz, ?If not them, then who? If not now, then when??.

New tests could hamper food outbreak detection

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's about to get faster and easier to diagnose food poisoning, but that progress for individual patients comes with a downside: It could hurt the nation's ability to spot and solve dangerous outbreaks.

Next-generation tests that promise to shave a few days off the time needed to tell whether E. coli, salmonella or other foodborne bacteria caused a patient's illness could reach medical laboratories as early as next year. That could allow doctors to treat sometimes deadly diseases much more quickly ? an exciting development.

The problem: These new tests can't detect crucial differences between different subtypes of bacteria, as current tests can. And that fingerprint is what states and the federal government use to match sick people to a contaminated food. The older tests might be replaced by the new, more efficient ones.

"It's like a forensics lab. If somebody says a shot was fired, without the bullet you don't know where it came from," explained E. coli expert Dr. Phillip Tarr of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that losing the ability to literally take a germ's fingerprint could hamper efforts to keep food safe, and the agency is searching for solutions. According to CDC estimates, 1 in 6 Americans gets sick from foodborne illnesses each year, and 3,000 die.

"These improved tests for diagnosing patients could have the unintended consequence of reducing our ability to detect and investigate outbreaks, ultimately causing more people to become sick," said Dr. John Besser of the CDC.

That means outbreaks like the salmonella illnesses linked this fall to a variety of Trader Joe's peanut butter might not be identified that quickly ? or at all.

It all comes down to what's called a bacterial culture ? whether labs grow a sample of a patient's bacteria in an old-fashioned petri dish, or skip that step because the new tests don't require it.

Here's the way it works now: Someone with serious diarrhea visits the doctor, who gets a stool sample and sends it to a private testing laboratory. The lab cultures the sample, growing larger batches of any lurking bacteria to identify what's there. If disease-causing germs such as E. coli O157 or salmonella are found, they may be sent on to a public health laboratory for more sophisticated analysis to uncover their unique DNA patterns ? their fingerprints.

Those fingerprints are posted to a national database, called PulseNet, that the CDC and state health officials use to look for food poisoning trends.

There are lots of garden-variety cases of salmonella every year, from runny eggs to a picnic lunch that sat out too long. But if a few people in, say, Baltimore have salmonella with the same molecular signature as some sick people in Cleveland, it's time to investigate, because scientists might be able narrow the outbreak to a particular food or company.

But culture-based testing takes time ? as long as two to four days after the sample reaches the lab, which makes for a long wait if you're a sick patient.

What's in the pipeline? Tests that could detect many kinds of germs simultaneously instead of hunting one at a time ? and within hours of reaching the lab ? without first having to grow a culture. Those tests are expected to be approved as early as next year.

This isn't just a science debate, said Shari Shea, food safety director at the Association of Public Health Laboratories.

If you were the patient, "you'd want to know how you got sick," she said.

PulseNet has greatly improved the ability of regulators and the food industry to solve those mysteries since it was launched in the mid-1990s, helping to spot major outbreaks in ground beef, spinach, eggs and cantaloupe in recent years. Just this fall, PulseNet matched 42 different salmonella illnesses in 20 different states that were eventually traced to a variety of Trader Joe's peanut butter.

Food and Drug Administration officials who visited the plant where the peanut butter was made found salmonella contamination all over the facility, with several of the plant samples matching the fingerprint of the salmonella that made people sick. A New Mexico-based company, Sunland Inc., recalled hundreds of products that were shipped to large retailers all over the country, including Target, Safeway and other large grocery chains.

The source of those illnesses probably would have remained a mystery without the national database, since there weren't very many illnesses in any individual state.

To ensure that kind of crucial detective work isn't lost, the CDC is asking the medical community to send samples to labs to be cultured even when they perform a new, non-culture test.

But it's not clear who would pay for that extra step. Private labs only can perform the tests that a doctor orders, noted Dr. Jay M. Lieberman of Quest Diagnostics, one of the country's largest testing labs.

A few first-generation non-culture tests are already available. When private labs in Wisconsin use them, they frequently ship leftover samples to the state lab, which grows the bacteria itself. But as more private labs switch over after the next-generation rapid tests arrive, the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene will be hard-pressed to keep up with that extra work before it can do its main job ? fingerprinting the bugs, said deputy director Dr. Dave Warshauer.

Stay tuned: Research is beginning to look for solutions that one day might allow rapid and in-depth looks at food poisoning causes in the same test.

"As molecular techniques evolve, you may be able to get the information you want from non-culture techniques," Lieberman said.

Capitol Confidential ? Dems marking line on campaign finance bill

Newly-elected Democrats held twin rallies in New York City and Albany to push for publicly financed elections.

They emphasized that taxpayer matching funds are a key to changing the system, and that they would sniff at a reform bill that simply tightened enforcement or lowered contribution limits.

?We?ve got have a robust and comprehensive reform, and any partial reform is not going to change the way Albany operates,? said Karen Scharff, executive director of Citizen Action and the Capital Region leader of the Working Families Party.

Mainstream Democrats have raised the specter of a half-loaf approach since members of the Independent Democratic Conference, who have mostly supported public financing, allied with Republicans who have rebuffed the measure.

Sen. Diane Savino, an IDC member from Staten Island, said last week that ?there can be baby steps? on the issue. Scharff as well as Sen. Neil Breslin, D-Bethlehem, said they were ?hopeful? that the group would remain supportive of a strong package.

?They?ve all supported publicly supported funding of elections in the past ? we look forward to the IDC fulfilling their promise to the people of the State of New York,? Scharff said.

?I would be surprised in the independent group didn?t support full, total, campaign finance reform ? not a watered down version that gives the appearance of doing something when, in fact, it doesn?t,? said Breslin.

He said it was ?very difficult to say at this time? if he would vote for a half-loaf measure. ?I have every expectation that we will have the full one,? he added.

Other public officials at the noon press conference included Sen.-elect Terry Gipson, Assemblyman-elect John McDonald and Assemblywoman-elect Pat Fahy.

Reading a book is additionally self improvement and private development or to be more precise, reading the book alone is not very self improvement, however reading the book, and applying what you learn is. To illustrate my point lets talk concerning one thing very generic, if you browse a book on lets say programming a webpage, it will perhaps help you perceive how the programmer makes the net-pages, but the particular page you would like to make, can not exist before you start programming it.

And equally the development of yourself will not occur just from reading a lot of books, but by applying what you learn in those books it will!

A massive variety of folks browse a ton of self improvement books, or even I should say a lot of beginnings of self improvement books, however not that several actually finish the books, and even fewer start applying the concepts or exercises they are presented with in the books. Whereas they'll like the book and the suggestions in it, most folks have a brief attention span, and before they get around to applying the new information, their eyes gets caught by another nice book, or one thing entirely totally different, and that they quickly move on while not getting any extremely life altering edges from it.

The secret behind good self improvement and personal development is that when you discover something you think might benefit you, you look additional into the topic, either by buying and reading a book regarding it, or finding data on the topic elsewhere, and at last applying the data in your own life and thereby making the enhancements you desire.

Remember it's continually smart to learn new things from reading a sensible book on the topic, but the knowledge has got to be put to smart use if you really wish to learn from it.

Even Faster Self Improvement Is Doable

If you have got interest in speeding up your self improvement even any, maybe you must consider looking into self hypnosis or meditation. Meditation is good for the soul and helps making an inner calm, while self hypnosis could be a very useful tool for implementing changes in your behaviour.

So as to urge any advantages from either of these methods you will have to be consistent in using and or applying them in your life. Regular use of meditation or self hypnosis will strengthen what ever have gone before it so to speak. Really it's like with each new thing, in the start it's not so straightforward, and it takes some effort both to apply it, and to remain with the programme, however once a whereas, it more or less becomes automatic or second nature to you, and that's when you may start to really notice the benefits.

If you are interested in learning meditation I'd suggest you seek for a private teacher, as you'll be enjoying around with the powers of your own psyche and as you immerse deeper into the techniques you may be stirring up recent emotions that can be difficult to tackle on your own.

A trained meditation teacher can bear in mind that this stuff happen beforehand, and is equipped to handle the emotions and make a case for to you the way to deal with them.

On the other hand if you want to learn self hypnosis for self improvement you could simply make sensible progress from the home study course I suggest at my website. Truly self improvement by self hypnosis may be a very powerful tool, and if you have got access to 1, I suggest you put it to smart use, remember though, shopping for, and reading the material isn't enough, you want to apply the knowledge too.
